Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

What do you have for breakfast on the 5:2 diet?

I'm thinking of doing the 5:2 diet. I've got at least 5 stone to lose. I'm not great at sticking to diets but this seems more manageable.

I can't skip breakfast. Whenever I do I end up eating crap for the rest of the day.

I am not keen on eggs and I don't eat fish. I've got 3 DC that I need to get up and ready. So I don't have a lot of time to make stuff.

I'm also breast feeing DD so I'm hoping this diet will be ok for that.

Thanks.

I wouldn't ^advise^ anyone to fast while they are breastfeeding. I've not seen any medical evidence to recommend it and i know that dr m himself said (being conservative) that he doesn't.
But it's been great for me.

Ideally we should eat nutritious food in moderate quantities. As a bf woman will burn around 500 cals a day making milk then "sensible" eating will ensure that after six months of ebf you'll have shed most of that "baby weight". I lost all my baby weight after ds without even thinking of my food take.

But 3 things spring to mind for me:

  1. I can't eat everything I like. (cake, chocolate etc.) It's not nutritious and this philosophy has led to me gaining more weight in pregnancy than I wanted to. Fasting helps me to moderate my intake without thinking about calories every day and still allows me to enjoy treats.
It's helped me to recognise and cope with normal hunger and I am better at avoiding snacks. I have lost weight faster this time than after my ds.
  1. My milk is not made from the food in my stomach. It's a body fluid, made from the components of my blood. The fat I've stored during pregnancy is being used to provide calories in my milk (as it should). So I'm not running on empty, I've got a (considerable) fat store offering fuel for the task. There's been no sign of a drop in my milk supply.
  1. I am interested in the reported health benefits of fasting.

II always take my vitamins and try to eat nourishing food.

I'm not on the 5-2 diet yet, just on here looking for a bit of inspiration. But one of my favourite breakfasts while dieting is 2 ricecakes with a chopped up banana on top. Only 130-50 calories and really filling! I'm another one that couldn't skip breakfast though :-)

Hi ive done the 5:2 diet since february and am breastfeeding. I have not noticed any drop in milk production nor any adverse effects in ds. Obviously it is your personal choice but in my experience it has had no effect. I wouldnt do it before 3 months to give chance to stabilise production and dont do 2 fast days together. Dont skimp on non fast days either, stick to your tdee.

I love it fast day today so i wont eat until 5/6pm tonight, just tea, coffee and water. I often feel hungry if i dont drink enough so plenty of water. Ive lost about 3 stone.

Great weight loss princess

Hi, I first tried the 5:2 when my baby was about 7 weeks old. I only lasted a couple of weeks and decided to give myself a break as I think it's too hard when you're not getting a decent night's sleep. My wee one is 6 months today and I just started it again last week and t was sooo much more manageable. I should add, I'm not breastfeeding either so it would be easier for me.

I know what it's like when you're desperate to shift the weight but go easy on yourself and think about trying it when you're little one is a bit older.

I have read the book and you are not recommended to try this diet if you are breastfeeding.

I've just started the 5:2 diet, and completely agree with trying to delay eating on your fast days. The later you start eating on your 500 calorie days, the easier it is... Have to admit to cheating a bit too - I'm using an appetite suppressing vitamin drink on my fast days. It's fantastic - it makes my usually very greedy appetite disappear for hours!

mumblechum1 · 11/06/2013 14:37

slummymummy what's the name of the drink you're taking if you don't mind me asking?

I'm another one who goes 24 hours with no food, ie on Sunday night I'll have my last meal at 6.30pm and eat nothing till Mon night at the same time when I have a Sainsbury's Good for You ready meal (abt 370 cals) and a salad

Pfaffer · 11/06/2013 14:39

Advice is not to do it when breastfeeding (for exactly the reasons you describe, I am sure, OP!).

I don't have breakfast, just wait until lunch. I too thought I was not capable of it, but actually it's absolutely fine.

SlummyMummy65 · 11/06/2013 21:24

Mumblechum - the supplement I take is v expensive but worth it! I get it from Space NK and it's called David Kirsch Thermo Bubbles. Kills your appetite, but watch out as it can keep you awake at night too... Good stuff, though.

mumblechum1 · 11/06/2013 21:48

Thanks Slummy Smile I'll give it a go. I only need to lose another 5lbs but they're proving difficult to shift!

aliga1 · 15/06/2013 23:09

I found that as a type 2 diabetic skipping meals ids not an option, my fast day breakfast has 1 slice of low cal bread 47c 1 slice of wafer thin ham 10c and coffee with a tbsp skimmed milk 10c, I will have 130c at lunchtime and 270c at dinner, lost nearly half a stone and 3 inches on my waist in 5 weeks, it really comes down to taste good luck
