5:2 Diet Thread! Number 15! Our quinceañera!

GreenEggsAndNichts · 11/03/2013 15:33

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

Michael Mosley has recently unveiled a new website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads: most recent one before that another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the links and tips that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting all the links re-copied and back into one post.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

BMJ I fast average 22 hours. I don't eat anything between 10pm one night and 8.30/9pm the next. But that's because I cope fine without the food. But lots of people can't cope that long so do better with little meals. I think the best health benefits of fasting come around 16+ hours but it's not possible for some people. A long fast is good to aim for though, I think.

BetsyVanBell · 16/03/2013 17:51

BMJ I aim for a fast of 17 or 18 hours without the calories. I've tried various ways of doing it and a I find splitting the 500 calories between a small lunch and a slightly bigger evening meal works for me. I eat quite early in the evening so I get a good fasting stretch over the next night too, especially if I have a late brekkie the next day.

I've done a 24 hour stint but I do get really grouchy by the 20 hour mark!

SaltyandSweet · 16/03/2013 17:55

itsaboat I lost the majority in the first two and a half weeks, which I think was a sign of how bad my pre-WOE diet was! Loss has definitely slowed down though I don't mind so much, as long as there's a downward trend ... Smile

Itsaboatjack · 16/03/2013 18:19

BMJ, I think a lot of us do do it that way, I try to do at least one 24hr true fast a week. But some people (including MM) find it a lot more doable to do 2 small meals. They are still giving their bodies a break.

I have just been looking back at my weight loss results. I started 5:2 7 weeks ago at 12st10.5lbs. Each week went like this

wk1 -4.5lbs
wk2 nothing
wk3 -4.5lbs
wk4 nothing
wk5 -3lbs
wk6 -1lb
wk7 nothing

weighed this morning, though not my official weighing day and lost another lb so that 1 stone in 7.5weeks. Happy with that :)

Minimammoth · 16/03/2013 18:32

Tonight sausage mash and veg plus wine. Mini eggsare on the menu too. Tomorrow eating out. I will def need to fast Monday. Fingers crossed for weight seesaw.

SaltyandSweet · 16/03/2013 18:40

Today is an eat day and I've eaten sporadically, but well, throughout the day. Anticipating my homecooked roast tandoori chicken with spicy green beans and a little rice, yum. I also made an apple pie only because DH was clamouring for one. Sigh, will see if I can limit myself to only one slice ... I love apple pie Blush. Will behave tomorrow I hope. I fast Mon, Wed and Fri but the urge to splurge on weekends is very hard to overcome

swallowedAfly · 16/03/2013 18:49

well i've had 2 meals today now and a few g&ts - feel as if i've been gorging myself or something which is ridiculous. still have my little bar of chocolate for later if i want it and will be within tdee and have done 16/8 i think even then but really does feel like i've eaten a lot.

tomorrow i'm going to my parents for a late lunch so won't eat till then and will hopefully get a good 18hr fast and stick within tdee. monday back to fasting. hope i don't bounce back up this weekend much from eating.

fingers crossed for us both minimammoth.

mehefin · 16/03/2013 18:54

Grin and now for the mangos been too exciting to eat !

swallowed another bonus is I still have a £20 note in my purse usually unheard of at this point in the week . Makes me realise how much can be frittered away on 'treats'

SomewhereBeyondTheSea · 16/03/2013 18:55

I find that skipping breakfast and lunch is ok on the first fast day but if I'm doing 2 days in a row then it's much harder on the 2nd day. Thinking of having porridge for brekkie on the 2nd day, to give me a boost. Then skip lunch and have light supper.

Another 1lb down this morning - despite eating pizza for dinner the night before! Amazing. Did my first yoga DVD today, I'm totally crap at it :D but will aim to improve.

Minimammoth · 16/03/2013 19:49

Links arms with swallowedafly may as well enjoy the food eh? Wine cheers

BlackMaryJanes · 16/03/2013 20:06

Very interesting weight loss Itsaboatjack It looks a lot like mine. May I ask some questions?

  1. What sex are you?
  1. What's your height?
  1. What's your activity level?
  1. Why do you think there are huge leaps of weight loss, with stagnation in between?

Thanks for indulging my curiosity :)

greenfig · 16/03/2013 20:43

Thanks catsrus will watch with interest!

Itsaboatjack · 16/03/2013 21:14

BMJ

Female
5'7
38 yrs old
Pretty active, walk 4 miles a day doing school runs, I short 10/15 min HIIT workout 3/4 times a week, and run twice a week, at the moment anyway. I can be quite sparodic with the running but I try to keep it regular, I'm training for a half marathon in 4 weeks so it will be regular for a while at least.

I don't know really about why weight loss is up and down, some water retention, some weeks have been better than others on eat days. I may start keeping a food diary and note length of fasts, how much alcohol etc, see if any of that makes a difference.

:)

ellenbrody · 16/03/2013 21:15

Oh lord, I have eaten like a hog. Cakes at work, sweets with the kids, sausage baguette for dinner. Loads of sugar and carbs and over 2000 cals! (TDEE is 1500).
Must make sure I eat plenty of fruit and veg tomorrow and stick to my fast on Monday!

BlackMaryJanes · 16/03/2013 22:30

Thanks for the info Itsaboatjack

I think a food diary sounds like a great idea. Do let us know if you ever figure out the reason for the weight stagnation. I experience it often myself and it perplexes me no end!

SaltyandSweet · 17/03/2013 08:19

ellenbrody in similar situation, overate yesterday, food hangover this morning. Will eat more moderately today and stick to my 3 fasts this week!!

TheHumancatapult · 17/03/2013 09:05

TheHumancatapult · 17/03/2013 09:07

but looking for something and not sure what .Have not got much of a sweet tooth at all any more( Easter eggs already brought in cupboard and not fussed)

HotPanda · 17/03/2013 09:38

I'm starting this today. I last ate at 8.30pm last night.

I've worked out my 16 hours is up at 12.30, and the 18 hours at 2.30. These are my mini targets. Getting to the first I know I can do, so each one after that will be my new goal. I don't think I can get to 8.30pm tonight, so will see how I go. I have different options to eat today depending on if I go for one meal or a snack and a meal so I do feel prepared.

I am a bit confused on the TDEE.
I am 5 7, currently weigh 72kgs (11s4lbs)

The BMR is 15.01 and the TDEE is 2063.
How do I work out what to eat on non fasting days? I think I am going to try fasting every 3rd day for the time being.

BetsyVanBell · 17/03/2013 09:58

THC You can do this fasting anyway you like, just try it with your normal routine and see how you get on. It's easy eat normally for 5 days per week and on 2 fast days eat only 500 calories. Some people who are maintaining weight drop down to doing one fast day per week. Do have a read through the OP and the links if you haven't already and join in on here! There are lots of fasters on a Monday so that tends to be a busy day on this thread :)

HotPanda The idea of working out your TDEE is so you know what your body's normal calories intake should be - so your eating allowance, should you want to count the calories, is 2063 calories. If you've got sensible eating habits you won't need to calorie count on non fast days, however, many people do in order to re-learn what a sensible day's eating looks like - often thanks to years of yoyo dieting or whatever. You are right to experiment with your timings and meals and go with whatever is most doable on that day. And certainly please don't feel you've failed if you only get to 16 hours! This is a non-punishment WOE and the idea is to make it a way of life rather than a quick fix. There is no fail and there's always tomorrow :)

BetsyVanBell · 17/03/2013 10:05

I've just written up my food diary for yesterday having thought I'd really overdone it but actually seeing it all written down it wasn't so bad after all (phew). I ate most of it during a 2 hour window so that's why it felt like so much.

However, I have no idea what I fancy eating for a main meal today, I usually have some interesting craving to satisfy but nothing is popping into my mind today at all Shock

maza66 · 17/03/2013 10:09

Happy St Patrick's Day fellow fasters. How is everyone doing? Have slipped a wee bit this weekend with a munchie box and copious amount of alcohol soooo back on the horse today. Am a bit peed off with myself as only have a few pounds left to shift !!!! and could have probably cracked it by now.
Is anyone else having problems with their skin? Despite lots of drinking water, fruit tea's etc I an having major flare ups and excessive dryness. Would really appreciate any advice as my usual skin care routine is not working anymore.

swallowedAfly · 17/03/2013 10:20

bvb - that's the same as happened to me - thought i'd stuffed myself silly roughly worked it out and i was under tdee.

welcome to newcomers Smile

TheHumancatapult · 17/03/2013 10:23

ekk how do i work out what i should be eating as rough idea normal day .As wheelchair user in some ways not so active no climbing stairs or getting up from sofa each day

fast wise i do not think should be to bad may try a 16 hour first ?or by fast just does it mean keeping under 500 a day

BetsyVanBell · 17/03/2013 10:31

maza Oh sorry to hear you're having skin trouble - I found mine's improved though i suspect that's partly because as my body's changed for the better I've been paying more attention to it iyswim - ie more scrubbing and moisturising. How long have you been IFing? Maybe your body is getting used to the changes and will settle down.

Saf I didn't calorie count but yes, it wasn't actually a huge amount at all. I wanted to open a pack of biscuits that are lurking in the cupboard so I think I mentally ate them but didn't actually! My weight's remained stable, no further losses seem to be imminent - I'm still higher than my new post-fast low weight but the bounce is smaller! However, I'm at 10 and a half stone on the dot and have been for most of my weigh ins this week and frankly, it's not a bad place to have a plateau - had to have 3 fasts to maintain it though! Not worried about it, will just plod along and hope for the best. AND I feel brilliant at this weight so that's fantastic.
