Fasting / 5:2 diet

5:2 Diet Thread! 14 threads in a stone?

GreenEggsAndNichts · 28/02/2013 10:18

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

Michael Mosley has recently unveiled a new website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- we won't bite. Well, maybe on a fast day. Wink You'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads: most recent one before that another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the links and tips that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

B&W has found a new link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here. If you're keen to see it, watch it soon, because BBC has been quick to find these copies and shut them down online. We're hoping they'll re-play it again soon. I know these threads are popular, maybe they'll read my request. Wink

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting all the links re-copied and back into one post.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Thanks GreenEggs Smile

I had Zero noodles yesterday Betsy for the first time as I was sick of soup - I just washed them, boiled them and mixed them with some wagamama chilli men sauce (which I love). Filled a gap, tasted ok.

Sorry but here to give myself an online pat on the back and some encouragement to those starting out. Been doing 4:3 since 4th Jan and on weighing today have lost another 2lb... Making it almost 1.5 stone so far! :) well it is 1st 6lb but I have had 2 cups of tea this morning so kinda rounding down.

Had a small wobble last week but think that was more to do with other life stuff. Keeping at it and hopefully the loss will continue! Fingers crossed!

Good luck all old and new fasters! :)

Well done Mama, that's a great result. I started in January too and have lost 13lbs so far. Just love this WOE as I feel I can do it for ever and no more diet stress :)

What I like about this is that reading your posts, this is the exact way people talked about the only other diet I've ever been successful on (controlling carbs) - way of life forever, not really a diet, making them feel better. This is what gives me a chink of hope!

ANYOne able to help?????

my MFP seems to have gone bezerk and won't offer up any new foods I am searching for - only what I have already put in.....and yesterday I had mostly 'new' foods as far as mfp is concerned....

soooooo can anyone work out how many calories this is that I had for dinner last night - my fast day?

100g cooked chicken - breast meat,

large salad with beetroot leaves, baby plum toms, cucumber and peppers and

about 10ml balsamic vinegar

AND ( now for the killer) about 1 small potato cut into 5 'squares' pan fried with 1 cal spay.

That was dinner last night - the POts were a real weakness but only had a few.

Only other calories I had were 3 strepsils (though not counting these as VERY coldy y'day)
Elderflower cordial (enough for 1 drink diluted over 1 1/2 litres of water) and 300g of Yorkshire provender pea and spinach soup.....

Any ideas????

saf i agree re the mini fasts, i quite often dont eat til mid pm even after a fast day, ive def got a lot more control over my hunger and listen to my body not my belly lol...
Weekly weigh in, another 1lb down and .5 of an inch :). My BMI says 20.85, but its more about getting the belly/love handles looking good in lycra outta sight which is happening yaay...
This WOE is so inspiring and it will be with me for life i think. Thinking of going 6-1 for mainetance as dont want to lose more than a couple of pounds now BUT if im honest i think i will miss the 2 days fasting as i do i feel virtuous and in control on the fast day........

artemis - definitely working for me. i've been reading about 20/4 and 16/8 fasting today and that might actually end up being my maintenance woe when i get to goal weight.

i have booked me and ds a holiday in sinai, egypt so i have extra motivation now. i used to live and work there when i was a svelte, tanned diving instructor and i hate going back there fat!!

Hello! fast day for me today, I weighed myself first thing and I have lost 4lbs since 1st of Feburary. It is quite slow and a bit 'bouncing around' but if the trend is downwards I'm happy. I still have at least 7lbs to go to my target, so I might be nearing it by Easter hopefully.

By BMI is 23.6 and I'm wondering about trying some 4:3 weeks to speed things up. Though I have to say I don't count at all on 'normal' days as I find it too tricky- how on earth to calculate home made pizza for example? So 4:3 or maybe a couple of 'low cal' days might speed the weight loss, what do you reckon?

Hi everyone!

I hope it's OK if I join your thread. I have just discovered this WOE after my friend told me she lost 14 lbs in 5 weeks on it. I'm 24 and have always struggled with my weight. I always find I can be really disciplined for a short period of time but it the motivation will eventually disappear, whether it's 2 days or 6 months. So this seems like the prefer eating program for me as I can last one day but then eat the next! My first fast day is today, and I've decided to break up my 500 calories into two meals. 200 at breakfast and 300 at dinner. Here's hoping :)

How is everybody finding the 5:2?
Does anybody recommend starting off on 4:3?

I have had Soup. 138 cals thereof. And lemon and ginger tea - about to have another cup.

I keep going back and forth between 'this is fine, I can do this' and 'I am really hungry now' ... but I know I need to save the rest of my calories for an evening meal now, I have 220 left.

Determined to get through till tomorrow morning.

hi systemsaddict,
I'm the same! It's my first fast day today. Been up since 8am and had a bowl of cereal with skimmed milk at 9.30am which was 180 calories. I'm now getting really hungry and keep thinking, no no it's fine, then realising how my stomach feels very empty. But I have my dinner planned out, plate of vegetables and fish fingers totalling 300 calories. It's really keeping me going...but it's the slowest afternoon ever.

Sutinder I don't have the book but I'm assuming he's talking about High Intensity Training...otherwise known as High Intensity Interval Training. Yes running up and down stairs or on the spot will count/help. I do up to 30 minute HIIT circuits at home - using weights etc to make it harder but bodyweight exercises are just as effective without extra weight eg plank, squat, lunge, press up. I do it 5 - 6 times a week and sometimes go out for a run at weekends. It's more effective for fat burning and metabolism boosting than steady state cardio but you have to work very hard albeit for not very long! I can do a very effective workout in 12 - 15 mins if Im pushed for time and feel like pushing it to the max.

Keep at it new people! It can be done. Mind over matter and all that Grin.
RLJ1874 many people find it easier not to start eating in the day as it seems to kick start your hunger somehow. The longer you can go without starting to eat, the easier it seems for many of us! Also, it means you're getting in a good 16hr or so fast of no calories before breaking that fast, and that also seems to be where the health benefits lie (although Dr M does do it like you, with a breakfast and an evening meal).
I'm on week 5 now and this week have dropped from 11.4 to 11.3 to 11.2 this morning! Am amazed as other weeks I've not moved on the scales at all. I suspect I might not be 11.2 for long so won't be disappointed if I "bounce" back up to 11.3 again in the next few days.
Total loss over (can't quite remember but think this is week 5) is therefore 5-6lbs. Slow but steady but more importantly, relatively easy!
Eating day today and have just enjoyed a lovely home made scone with jam and cream. No guilt about the wine or maltesers I intend to have tonight either!

dotty i am thrilled to find my scales have moved today also down to 10st 10 ! this is end of week 5 for me and I started at 11 2 .so I am well happy that Im down by 6 lbs. my scales came to a standstill for 2 weeks which is so disheartening when you KNOW youve not 'cheated,' which I have to admit I have done WW & SW . im going to change my fast days next week to Tues/ Fri because i have a work conference wed-thurs and that means a nice hotel lunch on 2 days. that is what I love about this WOE its versatile/ flexible and you dont have to pay anyone £5 a week to tell you' stayed the same lovie' on the scales of shame.
