Fasting / 5:2 diet

5:2 Diet Thread! Perfect number 10!

GreenEggsAndNichts · 20/01/2013 15:24

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet. Both are two versions of Intermittent Fasting, which you can read more about here.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like. Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average, on those days.

Michael Mosley has recently unveiled a new website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- we won't bite. Well, maybe on a fast day. Wink You'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads: most recent one before that another one etc!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the links and tips that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

B&W has found a new link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here. If you're keen to see it, watch it soon, because BBC has been quick to find these copies and shut them down online. We're hoping they'll re-play it again soon. I know these threads are popular, maybe they'll read my request. Wink

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Important link if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

And for those already fasting, here is a link to 100 snacks under 100 calories. We tend to favour lots of hot drinks during the day (count your milk if you use it!)

Another food link, here is a link to the BBC Good Food site, with a list of low-calorie soups.

We mentioned BMR and TDEE often. Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE) quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day. (This is a new calculator to previous threads, this one seems to give me approximately the same results the last one did, but without the virus warnings on my browser!)

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting all the links re-copied and back into one post.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Hi, I'd love to join in, watched the horizon programme back in August and found it fascinating, I was PG at the time so couldn't start then. Would like to start now but I am breastfeeding my 9 week old DD2 so not sure if I can or not. I had a look on Michael Mosley's website and it doesn't mention breastfeeding women not being able to do it, does anyone on here know or is anyone else on here BFing? sorry if this seems a silly question, I know BFing uses up extra calories but I figured if I have weight to lose (which I do) it might be ok to do this? Any advice much appreciated Smile

Hello all - feel like I have been off for ages. In truth it's only been a week and a half (I think). A couple of reasons this. Having had a good run since start of December I spectacularly fell off and couldn't manage even one fast day last week. Not sure why but I lost all willpower and turned to carbs. It was hectic at work, lots of PMS not to mention the weather. I have finally read through all the posts although skimmed a few as they were being written faster than I could read. Finished last night at 2:30am. Decided to leave posting till am. Well DCs are at school and its a new week and I am back to fasting today. First day of TOTM but hey ho will really go with this. Plus I gave run out of miso soup. Will have to think of something different. Interesting thing DH suck with the fasts last week. Well it wasa bad week as even on feed days I did really splurge. And the weight has crept up a little but I believe it is a fair bit of water retention. Anyway wish me luck - I am resetting on the fast again today. Will report back later. Better crack on with some work.

welcome aboard sausages the fasting days definitely get easier. Well done on weight loss so far. Glad you're feeling confident about this. I've been on ww previously for what seems like forever. Am totally converted to this way of living/eating. Spent yesterday cleaning out the cupboards and it felt really +ve to throw out all the old ww stuff (journals, eating out guide etc).

Sorry Snowkey hope you're well but meant to say hope you feel better soon to after8's. Good old home made chicken soup! Hope it perks you up!

Hi Laska , ditto, should be working too but my excuse is that our remote desktop keeps throwing me out Wink

Kissy I seem to be the only one around, ATM...

Here's what literarygeek posted on the 14th Jan:

I am also exclusively bf a 5 month old, and have been doing this since beginning of November. For me, it is working - not super fast but also not too slow.

Other reports I've seen have said that it's absolutely fine to bf whilst fasting.

Oh, and welcome! Smile

I'm currently breastfeeding but my daughter is almost 2 so I wasn't too worried if my supply did drop. I think I would probably wait if still exclusively breastfeeding or perhaps just do one fast day a week rather than two

I hope your strategy for kick starting the weight loss works laska it's interesting to be so in touch with our bodies that we can do this fine tuning isn't it?

I tried to put some new jeans (charity shop purchase on saturday, skinny 12's Grin) into my wardrobe this morning and there was no room. I went through all the trousers/jeans/skirts and put all the size 14's aside for the next charity shop bag. I already did the 16's a few months ago. Our local charity shops are doing very well out of 5:2 from this household!

I think I'm moving more towards the restricted eating window as my 'norm', even for non fast days, as the best way for me to maintain lower weight. That's not to say I won't ever have breakfast or lunch again - I'm sure I will - but as a general rule I find not eating easier as I don't think about food and the hunger is a different kind of hunger - it feels more 'purposeful' if that makes sense? like my body is doing something rather than it being empty. It may well be that this weight is my lowest sensible maintainable weight - but there is still a good wedge of fat around the middle so I hope I can get rid of that!

Hi catsrus. Thought you might like to know that I am following your advice and doing 4:3 this week :). After my spectacular gluttony day last week when I couldn't leave the carbs alone, I thought this might just get me going again. Of course, 2 days after my rant...TOTM! So that will explain that, but still am going to give it a couple of weeks and then drop back to 5:2. I want this just to be a kickstart as I don't expect 4:3 would be sustainable in the long run for me.

cats that's interesting..can you expand a bit on the eating window you aim for ? and how you eat on eating days?.. if you are not having breakfast or lunch surely you cant be eating your 1500-1700-ish calories all in one meal? ( or am i being dense?..and reading this wrongSmile )

Thanks all for your good wishes, have got out of bed & & after a chai feeling a little less inflamed. Lovely as your soup sounds laska I don't have any of the ingredients mentioned so Greek chicken soup it is! Though may add dried chilli flakes for extra zing.

Hi all, well as I suspected, I weighed this morning after doing 2 weeks of 4:3 and I haven't lost a thing. Although a little sad at this, Ive decided that i must have been doing something wrong. So I am now going to record every single morsel I eat/drink in the Calorie counter on MFP to see where I was going wrong. I am on a fast day today and am just having a black coffee now while in work. Im going to have a cup a soup for lunch and a ham salad for tea. Fingers crossed this will start me off on a better path.

Weird. I'm doing 4:3 at the moment. I switched from ADF so that I can have an eating 'weekend' once a week. Today is day 2 of that eating 'weekend' but I just don't seem to be hungry, almost like my body was expecting another fast day. Went out to grab some lunch but couldn't eat it all (normally scarf the lot and then have something for afters) so took it home to have for dinner. Ate more of it at dinner time (it's 8.20pm here now) but still not hungry and ended up chucking the rest of it away.

Well that's fine by me, just so long as my body doesn't expect a food day tomorrow!

hi everyone-ive been reading through the old threads and this seems like a nice friendly, supportive place so i thought id join.
im on my second week of 5;2 (lost 3 pound so far) i downloaded dr moselys book to my kindle and found it really interesting. i dont think im particularly overweight 5ft 6 now weighing 10st 2 but just feel generally uncomfortable so hoping to drop a stone or so.
last week the fasting was easy i didnt eat until tea time and had my 500 calories in one go today however i am struggling im soooooo hungry but i am desperately holding out till tea as i think if i nibble i will cave :-(. anyway have minestrone soup planned for tea but im getting the jist on here that most folks tend to avoid carbs on fast days so ill bear this in mind for next time. im off to brave the snow now to buy some bouillon in the hope it will help me hold out.

I thought I posted on this thread but I realised when I came back I posted to the wrong thread.

Anyway, it's a fast day for me. things fell apart late in the day last fast day (Thurs) and the weekend has been a very foody one so I am determined to stick it to the end this time. I've just fed the children (snow day) and now I am going to distract myself with study.

hi all, lost a long post when mumsnet went offline, so now just a quick hello.

Thanks to greeneggs for starting new thread, honestly think I only posted twice on the last one, it's moving so quick.

now starting to have that proud feeling that I was there at the beginning of a revolution! (ok a diet revolution, but still! imagine if in 30 years time people all talk about how 5:2 fasting became the way that britain got back to health?)

fast day for me, really want to have a good week this week as my bf has restarted fasting after giving up because of stress after only a month, suspect he will lose at a fast rate to begin and I don't want to get too behind, I've become a bit complacent, but would love to lose 14-21 pounds.

i'd better head out to stock up on soups!

Hi everyone, I have been lurking a bit and intend to do my first fast day tomorrow. I have a couple of questions though:

Any big losses over time? (I have quite a bit to lose)
Do you vary the fast days?
Does anyone do 3 days one weeks of fasting then 2 the next?

I have tried various other diets but always slip in the end. I am looking forward to this one as fasting for a day is manageable and if I really wanted something I would only be one day away from having it.

Afternoon all

Dr M on the Richard Bacon show BBC Radio 5 Live this afternoon, show starts at 2.00 but not sure when Dr Ms bit is. Anyone into Podcasts I think they do highlights podcast of the show as well so if you can't be bothered to listen to Richard Bacon for 2 hours there's always that.

Great to see so many people new to the thread, less than a day in and 100 odd posts already!

Have a great day all

Today is a fasting day for me and I just put my food plan together for the day-I'll come in at 502 calories if I stay on track :) Having two normal days in a row this weekend is messing with my head a bit, since with ADF I would have fasted yesterday. I'm very interested to see how having two normal days in a row, followed by a fasting day, will affect my weigh in tomorrow morning :)

Report
sarajaynevz · 21/01/2013 13:34

whatkungfuthat - I'm coming from ADF (every other day normal/fasting rotations), so very similar to what a 4:3 plan would look like. Since November 7 I've lost 19.5lbs on it. I'm very happy with this, especially since I didn't do any fasting the week of Christmas. I'm now trying out the 5:2 plan, to see if fewer fasting days stalls my weight loss/can I maintain my current weight doing this etc.
