The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet. Both are two versions of Intermittent Fasting, which you can read more about here.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon a month or two ago, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like. Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average, on those days.

Here is a list of the links we've gathered so far about this diet. I hope I haven't left many out, but we've filled several threads by now. Please share if you find something particularly useful, and we'll add it for the next thread.

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads: most recent one before that another one.

Another thread which breadandwine has just started can be found here. We'll be trying to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules.

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

is a link to the first part of the aforementioned Horizon, subsequent parts of that episode are linked on that page.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Important link if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

And for those already fasting, here is a link to 100 snacks under 100 calories. We tend to favour lots of hot drinks during the day (count your milk if you use it!)

Another food link, here is a link to the BBC Good Food site, with a list of low-calorie soups.

We often mention basal metabolic rate (BMR) here. This refers to the amount of energy (calories) a person uses when at rest; so, the basic number of calories a person needs to stay the same weight. This number is often quoted as being 2000 calories for the "average" woman, but of course is different depending on how tall you are, how much you weigh, etc. Here is a calculator which will easily help you to find out what your BMR is.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting them all in one post this afternoon. Wink

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Mintyy

I hope you feel better soon , there are some very nasty viruses around at the minute. I think if you are that poorly then trying to fast pobably isnt a good idea. Take it easy and just go with whatever your body tells you.

My own particular cure for these thing is to drink lots of whisky, works every time for me .

GirlWithTheMouseyHair · 22/10/2012 20:13

so managed to 17hours and to be honest only really ate because I was making DD her lunch and nice to sit and eat with her - so we shared a 2egg feta and spinach omlette, pretty much halved. Miso soup for dinner this evening.

Have discovered key limes - I thought it was just the name of the pie but apparently not! They are DELICIOUS squeezed into water, hot or cold, lush lush lush

Hope you feel better soon Mintyy sounds horrid

Piebald that is often my medicine of choice too!

Breadandwine · 22/10/2012 20:38

Thanks, mocnk. Hope you get together soon.

If it's any consolation (and it probably won't be) when you do get your partner back on this WOE, he'll probably lose weight quicker than you! Smile

As we lose weight on this WOE, there'll be landmarks that tell us we're slowly regaining control over our lives. It might be fitting into a favourite pair of jeans, or deciding you can bring a regular pub lunch into your routine, or whatever.

I've belatedly realised I don't have to have lo-cal lemonade in my pre-dinner shandy - I can have regular lemonade. A small victory, but a victory none-the-less!

And here's another landmark - much more significant:
It's our anniversary on Wednesday (42nd, since you ask) - which is supposed to be a fasting day, but we'll just move it to Thursday - and I've bought my wife a box of Thornton's chocolates! This is the first time I've bought her chocolate in, well, decades!

But, with this WOE, I feel I can do it without either of us feeling any guilt! Can't wait to see her face!

(Don't worry, she doesn't look at this thread - and if she did sneak a look, well, she'd have to pretend, wouldn't she? Grin)

I'm pretty sure I know what she'll do with the chocolates. She'll select several then hand back the box with instructions to let her have a couple every evening.

I'll report back what happens.

audley · 22/10/2012 21:16

First fast day has gone well. pretty much bang on 500, have been busy today which helped and rather too much coffee - was buzzing by 2pm!

TalkinPeace2 · 22/10/2012 21:20

Fasted today.
Tea for breakfast, gym for the morning (2km swim and yoga), black coffee and housework for the afternoon. Baked beans, scrambled egg, hot dog for supper and a satsuma. The mini apple turnover (home made) pushed me to 600 calories ingested. But I feel full!

Jester2050 · 22/10/2012 21:31

Hi, just a quick question: when calculating calories, do you calculate at the uncooked weight (eg 100g chicken) or weigh it after cooking?

Thanks,

TalkinPeace2 · 22/10/2012 21:38

I tend to use MyFitnessPal - so you can put in "baked chicken" etc etc

GirlWithTheMouseyHair · 22/10/2012 22:21

I am clearly a numpty - MFP doesn't work for me, where the hell do you enter the food for a start?!

Happy Anniversary BreadandWine - blimey, 42years??? That's amazing, congradulations to you both for Wednesday, enjoy those chocolates!

Feeling good so far, so nice to be back on a proper fast, much easier when I don't have guests! Have booked myself in for a full on hilly training ride on 24th, straight after Thanksgiving, alongside booking in the fast days, to get over the gluttony that will commence

2beornot · 22/10/2012 22:29

First weigh in for me and .......

4lb off in my first week. I'm very pleased with that.

Even with the KFC on Saturday I only averaged 1400ish per day for the week. And so far so good with the fasting days.

Thank you everyone for the tips!!

nminx · 22/10/2012 23:28

Hello all. This is the first time I've posted. I've been following the threads since I started doing the 5:2 in August. Reading the threads has answered questions and given me support so thank you to all for your honesty and comments about health benefits and weight loss.
My husband lost his mum to Alzheimer's and his dad to cancer so when I persuaded him to watch the programme he decided to give it a go. He has never dieted in his life and has never been what I would call over weight. However he lost a stone in about three weeks flat! I have lost ten pounds (although this week the scales are showing I'm 2 lbs up but I'm ignoring that as official weigh in day is not until Thurs) and I seem to find it much harder than him. Ten weeks in I can honestly say its not been easy, however it is easier than ANY other weightloss regime I've ever done - and I've done quite a few! The thing that I'm most relieved about is that my guilt about EVERY bit of food that goes into my mouth, has gone. I now eat with joy!
I think I find the fasting days harder than hubby because I have to plan and cook our child's meals and he never has to spend time thinking about what's for dinner.

I've noticed several comments about side effects and I had serious flu-like symptoms for 5 days where I literally couldn't get out of bed. Maybe it was flu and not 'carb-withdrawal-flu', but we have been taking our blood pressure and both of ours have dropped - in fact mine is now on the worrying side of low, so that could explain occasional dizziness etc on fast days.

Anyway, just wanted to let any new thread readers know about my experiences so far.

Hubby's feet have stopped smelling too! (Bizarre, I know).

Oh and one final thing, Veetee microwaveable rice packs are about 400 cals and taste great with a squirt of lemon juice. I feel satisfied after one of these on a fast day.

claretandamberforever · 23/10/2012 07:43

Right I'm getting back on it. I've had a couple of weeks off and have noticed I'm starting to get a bit bloated around my middle again. I'm 3lbs heavier than I was two weeks ago when I last did 5:2 and I know a lot of that is water gain as I haven't been hammering it.

BUT

I've now got a new job which I start in late November. There's a uniform to wear which I wont get until I've completed my three months probation but I'd really like to order a size 14 and be comfortable in it.

When I do my 2 fast days for the next 4 weeks (in my current job) I'm going to do Slim n Save meals/shakes, I did try and stick to low cal, but 600 calories worth of food isn't a right lot.

claretandamberforever · 23/10/2012 07:44

Is there somewhere that I can watch the programme? I didn't watch it when it was broadcast

frenchfancy · 23/10/2012 08:34
other parts also on You tube.
Laska42 · 23/10/2012 08:37

claretandamber its

mintyy hope you are feeling better today
Bread and Wine congratulations that's impressive indeed

Well my two days fast were OK actually. The SP on the scales show another lb down (its going slow now I'm in normal BMI) and waist another inch .. 30! Blimey.. cant remember the last time I was that .. ( but I don't count 'em until official WI on Fridays ..

I need some food now though ..

Laska42 · 23/10/2012 08:42

oh yes.. knew there was something else ..

GirlWTMH on MFP (I'm assuming you've set up your account with your weight and goals and logged in and are on a laptop or something.. don't know what it would look like on a phone) .. If so, you can access your food diary and the database from 'food' which is the 2nd blue tab across the top .. it comes up with a diary for each day and the food you enter is saved on your foods list to use again if you want..

hoops997 · 23/10/2012 10:26

Hello all,

Welcome to the newbies Smile well, another 2lbs off for me bringing my weight loss to 13lbs in 6 weeks.

I've fallen off the wagon a couple of times on fast days too but this WOE allows that and I didn't feel bad at all.

Good luck, fasters and eaters Grin

FoodieToo · 23/10/2012 10:45

Hi all. Joining you all from Dublin!
My name is FoodieToo and I am a serial dieter lol!!
I lose and regain the same stone again and again!

Only started this woe last week. Loving it so far!

Laska42 · 23/10/2012 12:07

Hi Foodie too welcome.. you've found the antidote to dieting!

FoodieToo · 23/10/2012 13:11

Am afraid to hope this may be the solution to my constant dieting!

TheCyclistist · 23/10/2012 13:53

Hi all, fasting day here and getting to that stage in the day when thoughts are turning to my empty stomach Wink . After some of the info posted here and some of the links I've decided recently to aim for ATLEAST 16 hours but hopefully longer with virtually no calories. Obviously all the science on this WOE is new and in some cases inconclusive but for me a 16-20 hour food free period is the way I want to go (for the anti cancer and other health benefits).

Still losing weight at the moment, but eating ALOT on 'UP' days, mostly high fibre, complex carbs.....and dark chocolate Wink

Well done to all those still losing or maintaining weight or getting the health benefits, and for those that are finding it hard - keep it up, it WILL in the end be worth while......... almost definiately

I LOVE THIS WOE or is it WOL (living). Smile

Laska42 · 23/10/2012 15:21

breadandwine wasnt it you who said you are a vegan? I'm not but i've just got all excited about this dark chocolate and avocado mousse. you could make it as a dessert for your anniversary maybe? ..

I think id find away to use real coffee in it though rather than instant ..

FoodieToo · 23/10/2012 16:01

Could someone please explain the 16 idea?

I thought I just had to stick to 500 calories on my fast days?

Thanks!

FoodieToo · 23/10/2012 16:02

Sorry that should say the 16 hour idea!

Breadandwine · 23/10/2012 16:17

Hi Laska

Thanks for the suggestion, that's very thoughtful of you! However, when I click on the link I get this message ?The certificate for this website is invalid. Host name mismatch.?

But I googled it and found several recipes out there - and I shall certainly make it soon. Still considering whether to go out for dinner tomorrow, or to get a takeaway.

Actually, now I think about it, I really should take her somewhere nice and insist she has three courses (rather than making a face as I used to do if she orders a sweet!). Smile

Cyclist I really like WOL - it sums the whole 5:2 thing up perfectly. And it also wouldn't bring people up short when they first see the acronym - not so with WOE! Grin

I've been looking more and more at appetite switches over the past week or so. If I don't eat anything, I don't feel hungry - if I do eat something, I want something more shortly afterwards. I've identified at least three occasions in the day/week where I can identify this. Even down to nibbling when I'm preparing dinner, for instance!

I've now gone on to 22 hours of fasting - from dinner last night to dinner tonight, for instance. And I'm thinking of cutting out all food and having a complete fast for 36 hours. We'll see how we go.

GirlWithTheMouseyHair · 23/10/2012 16:18

thanks Laska - when you said two fast days, did you just do two back to back?!
