Only using condoms for contraception

Does anyone only use condoms? How has it worked for you? Or has anyone experienced failure with ‘perfect’ use?

Recently had our last baby, DH on waiting list for vasectomy and I’m not keen to use hormonal contraception in the meantime. Can’t take combined pill due to migraine with aura, previous terrible experience with mini pill so GP recommended staying away from over progesterone contraceptives which suits me. Don’t fancy the idea of a coil so pretty much left with condoms.

We have agreed that if an unplanned pregnancy happened, it happened and we’d deal with it though it’s not part of the plan. Just wondering how other people have gotten on with only condoms

Zero issues, other than I don't particularly like them. But from a effectiveness point of view, fine. Never had one split or come off, no unplanned pregnancies. They are just a bit shit in the moment.

How about using a cap as well as a condom to reduce risk of pregnancy further?

greengreengrass3 · 10/11/2025 22:22

We have done for the past 3 years since I’ve come off the pill, no issues at all but I really hate them so DH is have the snip at the end of the month

I used them for years. I’d imagine the majority of accidents occur because people take a chance during their ‘not fertile’ window.

Used them for years but DH has just had a vasectomy so hopefully not for much longer. I suppose it depends on how much you can trust yourself not to get carried away before it goes on. We had a few scares over the years but it was always a bit of recklessness on our part rather than the condom tearing or similar.

We've always only used condoms. I've been with OH for 20 years (first and only partner) and I've never taken regular hormonal contraception. We've found it to work really well for us. I do keep the morning after pill in the house in case one splits (you can buy online for about £5 each). I have had to take the MAP once in all that time due to a comdom split which was fine too. I have never been pregnant (we're child free by choice). We buy Durex condoms online in packs of 40 or so from Amazon.

Obviously I don't know what it would have been like if I had been on long term contraception but I have seen what my friends have been through which often seemed quite negative and I was always surprised how they tolerated and never questioned it. I have pretty easy, short periods and no particular hormonal troubles or mood swings, my sex drive has always been very good and attraction to OH consistent.

Ive used them for sole contraception for about 20 of the 21/22 years i have needed contraception

Never had a slip up or split (and I got pregnant very easily so it was definitely the condoms stopping things!) But I always use durex. Have used them with a variety of sizes and havent had any fall off

Coil is easy and convenient. Installed in 1min. You forget its there, don't have to worry about pregnancy or surgeries. Just go about your day / life.

But each to their own
