Planning pregnancy after pulmonary embolism

Worryingmum101 · 10/06/2025 20:06

Would like to know if there is anyone who can offer advise on pregnancy after P.E -Pulmonary embolism. I have a 6 year old who I had a health pregnancy with and a natural, uncomplicated labour. When my son was 7 months I had an p.e episode (clots in the lung) due to going back on my pill (the doctor believed). I was on blood thinners for 6 months and had no problems since. My copper coil is due out next month and am planning my final pregnancy however was not sure how my p.e would effect it. I have been to my GP for advice and felt nothing was answered. They have asked the Haematology clinic to email me with some pregnancy advise. Any advise would be appreciated.. I'm worried.. will I just put myself and possible my baby in danger ?

Love to all ... Worrying mum

I remember my DSD was put on Clexane injections throughout much of her last pregnancy for similar reasons, @Worryingmum101, which I believe is pretty standard? (Or it certainly was at the time, 7 years ago.)

Can you recall if your GP said anything about Clexane? And/or prior to this, taking a small dose of aspirin? I’ve seen other MNers talking about this on other threads.

Your midwife should take the lead, ideally, early on, liaising with/referring to other teams as needed.

Maybe have a google of your local NHS Health Trust /ICB and ‘pregnancy PE Clexane’ for their particular protocols. Forewarned is forearmed and all that, especially when speaking with GPs.

Good luck and best wishes Flowers

I had a PE before my pregnancies and then 2 healthy children. I also had several MCs and they told me that I have a higher risk of MC because of my clotting issues. My PE was also likely caused by contraception but would be good to find for you if you have other underlying issues.
During my pregnancies and 6 weeks after birth I injected a blood thinner, and took a low dose aspirin. As soon as I tested positive, I started w blood thinners.
I was classed high risk pregnancy, had more scans and was told I wasn’t allowed to go over 40 weeks. I had inductions booked at 40 weeks, DC2 was born before.
I also didn’t have a choice re the injection for the placenta to come out (can’t remember what it’s called), I was given it immediately to decrease risk of bleeding.

Thankyou that has eased my anxiety !
Can I ask did you have natural births or did you have to have planned CS? I have heard back from the Haematology clinic they have advised I would be on Eoxaprian from the first thirmester. The doctor has referred me for tests to check if it could be genetic so they are clear on the dosage needed. However they have advised the waiting list is months long. If I was to fall before being seeing them may be able to guess the dosage by my weight. But no underlying health issues far as I know. However I was on the pill for 10 years before having my son for it to cause blood clots postpartum..

both natural births. I was on herparin. I am very surprised they didn’t do the tests after your PE. Mine were done immediately afterwards.

APS can be triggered by the pill btw

Another theory is that many people with abnormal antiphospholipid antibodies only go on to develop APS if they have a higher risk of developing blood clots.
For example, if they:

Thankyou, yes of would of thought they would have don't the tests then 😞. Going to be waiting a long time by the looks of it to find out and would have to take a standard dosage in the meantime time. I am generally fit and healthy, non smoking, gym addict.
