Deadly combined contraceptive pill and migraine with aura?

Sorry for the dramatic title. But

Has anyone ever experienced migraine with aura at anytime in their life, and taken the combined contraceptive pill?

Doctor is refusing to prescribe it yet it's the only thing that regulates my periods because I had ONE - NOT while I was taking the pill might I add - migraine (with aura ie visual disturbances) in my life or at least I think that's what it was. I also have mitral (heart) valve leak and thought ostrogen is supposed to help heart health?

To my knowledge, I’d only have like a 1/1000 chance of a blood clot or cardio event.

I haven't had a period in 6 months and my hormone/ thyroid/liver blood test all came back as normal ie
NOT peri/menopausal so I just want my period back and the combined pill is the only thing that will work.

They want to put me on the progesterone only pill and I have no idea why, it's not going to regulate my periods - it stops them even for women that have periods.

So has anyone had migraine/aura yet taken combination pill anyway?

It’s contraindicated so no Doctor would risk their license prescribing it to you when there are so many other options. As who’s door will you come knocking on when you have a massive stroke!

I’m sorry but no one is going to prescribe the combined pill with this absolute contraindication. You don’t “need” to have periods so a POP or mirena IUS would (in time) control the bleeding and provide contraception. The period on the combined pill isn’t a true period, it’s a withdrawal bleed. Good luck.

I get these type of migraines and have been only allowed POP. Not combined. Not worth the risk anyway.

It increases your risk of stroke exponentially. It’s not worth it, I promise. You probably need to consider Mirena or another form of implanted contraceptive.

I get migraines with aura (since I was a teenager) and I was prescribed Microgynon by my gynaecologist (to help with my PCOS). I took it for years without any issues. I only stopped when my NHS GP decided they would no longer prescribe it due to the cost.

I was just filling the form for a repeat prescription of the combined pill this week and it asked about migraines. I said no but I actually did have a migraine with aura while out on our staff Christmas lunch early Dec. I put it down to using the computer all day without proper lighting, it was a dark day. Last time I had a migraine was over 5 years ago when pregnant so I wasn't on the pill then. I'm going to continue taking it and maybe monitor my headaches.

I get migraine with aura and never been allowed by nhs doctor to have combined pill. I think it seriously increases stroke risk?

Mirena coil is good though- worth a shot.

Why would you risk it? You can't 'monitor' a stroke? That could just happen.

I took it for years as a young woman who regularly suffers with migraine with aura. It chills me to think that I was at risk all that time. Haven’t been allowed it since about 2012 when someone actually asked me about migraines.

AgricolaOrBed · 18/01/2025 07:41

1/1000 of a serious event is quite a high risk.

I've been on the same pill most of my life though, I don't think I should stop because of two episodes of migraine most likely causes by the computer/vision issues?
