Would it be crazy for newlyweds to buy a sports car when trying for a baby?

Hi all,

My husband and I live frugally, we don’t buy lavish things, but we’d love to buy one of the old porshes (about 5k-8k), as it’s something we’ve driven before and both just always wanted!

The only thing is, we’re trying for a baby (or, seeing where it goes over the next year).

My husband said we should maybe park the dream and get a used four seater as that’ll mean we can use it for years to come.
Or should we live while we are able to and get the car we’ve always wanted?
My husband can easily be swayed on this… I’m sure.

I can see both sides and am appealing to you (young families esp) for your opinion!

Oh also helpful to say that we’d sell my old Vauxhall corsa and this would be our ‘new’ shared car.

Thoughts please? Thank you x

Your husband is right.

poppyzbrite4 · 20/09/2024 11:17

Buy one then sell it if you conceive.

Neolara · 20/09/2024 11:18

Buy a sports car only if you also have a family car as well.

MonsteraMama · 20/09/2024 11:22

I mean if you can afford to then sell it and buy a sensible car if you get pregnant, why not? You might only own it for a few months but so what?

Or just keep it and strap the kid to the roof, sure it'll be fine 🙃

Ladyandherspaniel · 20/09/2024 11:25

Surely you will be pregnant for 9 months and it could take a while to fall pregnant so you could use it for a year at least, then sell it on.

You may never get this opportunity again once you have kids coz youl then get grandkids...

Live dangerously 😉

Pipsquiggle · 20/09/2024 11:37

It depends how much you can afford to lose - a few k? If you can afford it, do what you like.

It's just that if you do get pregnant you might need to save for other stuff like childcare and a car with a boot

MinnieCauldwell · 20/09/2024 11:40

Go for it! You are young, you may never get another chance once you are a familiy

foobio · 20/09/2024 11:42

There's no stamp duty or tax on buying and selling cars, so no harm in buying one and selling when you need a bigger one. Just bear in mind the depreciation as to whether it is worth it for a potentially shorter period of time.

LadyDanburysHat · 20/09/2024 11:43

If it is going to be your only car then it seems quite pointless, as if you do get pregnant quickly you won't have it for long.

eurochick · 20/09/2024 11:46

Go for it. Enjoy it for the year (or longer) until you have a baby.

Newlytrying2024 · 20/09/2024 11:49

Loving these replies! Very mixed though… need a few more telling me to not be sensible and to live on the edge haha

Do it! DH and I ttc for 5 years, he bought a Porsche as ‘up yours’ to the universe, and then I conceived 4 months later after our 5th round of ivf. He said ut was the least sad he’s ever been to sell a car.

FYI they’re not great to travel in when heavily pregnant 😆.

SonicTheHodgeheg · 20/09/2024 12:05

I would do it in a 2 car household where the other car was a 4 seater.

lemonstolemonade · 20/09/2024 12:07

DH is right. But DH and I did have a lovely trip just before kids where we hired a sports car to drive. In Italy with top down. Maybe something to consider?

jay55 · 20/09/2024 12:07

Do it now, enjoy it while you can. Then trade it in for something sensible.
Else it'll be 18 years down the line and your hips won't be as sprightly for getting in and out.

Bankholidayhelp · 20/09/2024 12:27

Buy the Porsche

FloofPaws · 20/09/2024 12:30

Buy the Porsche and get a boring family car when you have to 😎

minipie · 20/09/2024 12:31

Buy the Porsche, as that guarantees you will get pregnant quickly (I’m a huge believer in sod’s law)

If it’s an old one it’s more likely to hold its value so you can resell once you need a family car.

Where do you live? If in a city with lots close at hand, you may find you don’t need a family car for the first few years anyway. I didn’t drive much when DC were babies, it was only once they were 4+ and doing activities/playdates etc that it became really useful.

StuntNun · 20/09/2024 12:32

I would get the sports car now. It can take a while to conceive and it might be years before you'll get the chance again once you've started a family. I'm Team Porsche!

Spinet · 20/09/2024 12:36

I mean you can drive your dream car for at least 9 months can't you. The chances of actually doing this when you have kids are miniscule until one of you has your mid-life crisis.

Singleandproud · 20/09/2024 12:36

Do you live somewhere you could manage without a sensible car?
Is public transport etc good or are you in the sticks?
How low is it, will you be able to get in and out easily if pregnant?
Do you earn enough to manage the extortionate amount on child care if necessary - would the depreciation of it and loss of any savings leave you in hardship or will you be fine?

BigFatLiar · 20/09/2024 12:42

We each had our own cars when we married. I had a tatty old sports car which we both learned mechanics on by doing it up. OH had a scruffy old car and when I fell pregnant he bought an old rover. I kept my sports car, still have it nearly 40 years on. He still has his old rover both have had a lot of restoration done. He has never liked my car but was it's main driver for a while as I used his car. Its amazing how much you end up carrying around with children, a sports car probably won't cut it.

Whether you buy now or later your husband is right you'll need a family car.

PortiasBiscuit · 20/09/2024 12:44

My DS found her DH sitting in his MGB crying one afternoon just after she’d conceived the first time. He realised he was going to have to sell his pride and joy..

Scrabblerabble89 · 20/09/2024 13:15

I'm guessing it might be a boxster? If so, the older ones (i think from 01-08) could present with pretty heavy engine troubles.
The 'IMS' bearing could fail, resulting in needing a new engine, which, 'cos it's porsche, will not be free.
That said, it certainly wasn't all of them, and if you're willing to chance the money, then they are absolutely brill, and generally retain value if you needed to sell it on in a hurry!

FusionChefGeoff · 20/09/2024 15:45

Do it!!!!!

Enjoy a few months fun and freedom before hopefully swapping for something more suitable when you're too big to get in it anymore.

And if it's not a straightforward TTC journey you can have a silver lining and enjoy your fancy car for longer.
