Low amh levels - advice wanted

Serry1678 · 11/08/2024 20:46

Hi

I recently received news that I have an amh level of 7.7 I've just turned 30. The doctor advised that this amh level is the same as someone between 40-41 years old. The news came as a shock which I'm still trying to take in and come to terms with.

I have a family history of early menopause and I'm worried about the window of opportunity remaining to have a family. I'm now considering bringing forward plans to plan for a child.

I would be grateful to hear from anyone with similar experiences / advice.

Thanks in advance.

Hello, I’m sorry that you’re unsettled by this news. It sounds like a shock.

I went for a fertility check after DC1, not for any specific reason, but because I just wanted to know how much of a priority I should make trying for DC2. I had really low Amh levels too, at the age of 35. It was a huge shock to me as my periods were regular and I’d fallen pregnant with DC1 pretty quickly. We decided to try for DC2 quickly and I fell pregnant the following month. I think the news made us prioritise the baby making and I was really careful with monitoring my lh surge.

I would say:

  • don’t panic. As the doctor told me, you only need the one egg
  • start monitoring your lh levels if you haven’t already. This should show when you ovulate.
  • ask your consultant about supplements and consider taking them if you feel that would be right for you.
  • Are you in a relationship with someone you want a family with at the moment? If so, you need to talk to them (if you haven’t already). If not, you will want to take advice on your options. I don’t know anything about egg freezing etc but hopefully you can get those answers if you need them

good luck x

Thanks TTCaxristi for your message and suggestions, I'm going to book a follow up appointment with the doctor and discuss supplements etc.

My husband and I have discussed bringing plans forward given the news and both of us on board to prioritise this as we really want a family - I just thought I would have more time.

I'm pleased there are positive stories out there despite having a low amh level. Your story gives me hope!

(Sorry I'm new to Mumsnet - so was not sure how to reply directly to your message).

My pleasure. I know it’s easy for someone else to say, but please try not to worry. If it helps, my Amh levels were a lot lower than yours (I think they were below 2) and I’m snuggling my little one now. It’s great that you and your husband are on the same page. Wishing you both luck x

I’m sorry you’ve had such disappointing results. ‘It starts with the egg’ has lots of great advice for improving egg quality which may boost the feeling you’re doing all you can. Good luck x

Thanks Quaver9 for the recommendation, I'll check it out!
