Mirena Coil

Hi All,

Due to have the mirena coil fitted next week and I'll be honest I'm absolutely terrified. I have never had a coil before but due to various factors the doctor has suggested that this is now likely the most suitable contraceptive for me.

Please can I have some real life experiences of having a coil fitted. Is it uncomfortable afterward, a friend said she could feel it when having sex etc.

I've also heard that is can cause heavy bleeding after it is inserted and for quite some time after.

Any advice and experiences would be appreciated.

Hi OP I’m on my second. Absolutely fine both times, a short pinch but no biggie. Took some paracetamol before and braced but any discomfort was a couple of seconds.

To be honest I’d happily put up with much worse to get my third (and there will be a third, as it’s been totally life changing). No periods for 10 years after fibroids and polyps and years and years of pain and misery. Light irregular bleeding afterwards but then NOTHING for a decade. Best thing that I ever did for my health and well-being.

I felt nothing when I got mine. However, Idid have some light bleeding every day for three months after which was really annoying. However, since then I've had no bleeding at all.

The best bit for me is that I feel so much better in myself. My mood is level for the first time ever. I had periods of awful depression and was always on the verge of tears. It's incredible not to feel like that that any more.

Only regret is not having one sooner.

Mine was a bit uncomfortable at the fitting but wouldn't hesitate to have one again-it's stoped my periods so changed my life so much for the better!

Had a few over 15 years, with the last one the nurse told me to cough as she was taking out, it certainly was a distraction (that's all!) and really helped. Absolutely loved not having periods.
My only warning would be that all hormone birth control methods may affect your libido - I wish I had been aware of that, still would have had a Mirena though.

Bit of an uncomfortable feeling and the vaguest of stomach ache for a few hours , then no periods whatsoever, I love it !

I had it done a few months ago

Took the day of work, as I had heard horror stories

The GP put it in within about a minute or so. It was about as uncomfortable as a smear test

Not a Big deal, I cramped a bit (like during period) for a few days but it soon settled and my periods became much lighter and now are almost gone

So glad I did it

I had one fitted on Friday and had my smear test done at the same time. I am pretty good with cervix bits and bobs after having multiple procedures, stretches and sweeps & dilation checks in labour. Never had a coil before but went in really relaxed (and took some painkillers an hour before) worst bit for me was the anaesthetic spray which I found a tiny bit burny and then a bit of pinching which I did some deep breathing and toe wiggling through. All done including smear within 5 minutes easily I'd say! A few crampy pains in the evening and some light spotting/bleeding for a couple of days. Good luck - it'll be all good!
