Mirena Coil - Period randomly back?!

Hi all

Wondering if anyone can help with this. I’ve had the Mirena coil for about 18 months now. Straight away after having it fitted, my periods changed to just spotting but still pretty regular (around 28-33 days) but then after about 6 months I’d say, they completely stopped and I haven’t had a period since until today when I’ve just noticed I’m bleeding. Is this normal or does it mean the coil has fallen out/not working properly?
I had an ultrasound for a completely unrelated issue about 3 months ago and the sonographer told me then she could see the coil was in place so I know it was ok up until then at least.

I absolutely do not want to ever get pregnant again!!! The thought terrifies me and I’m so anxious about it 😰

Should probably add - I’ve never been able to feel the strings and I was told they were cut quite short so I can’t tell if it’s still there by checking that way 😩

Have you had the covid vaccine?
The implant meant I wouldn't ever have a period. Because of the vaccine it now means I get random periods even after I tried a new implant.

I last had a Covid vaccine in Dec 21 and haven’t had a period since then until now so don’t think it’s that 🤔

hi hope you are well. Did it ever settle for you? I have had it for irregular periods and they’re even worse now. I’ve had mine 6 months and having a period when I haven’t had one in ages- just spotting almost daily since fitting until now x

I had a smear, ultrasound, hysteroscopy all 6 months ago before it was fitted, so they think they’ve covered all bases with that, I rang the hospital yesterday as i was under gynae and they’ve made me an appointment for 4 months time xx

Thought I’d add an update to this thread for anyone else in a similar situation.

So after I posted this the bleeding never happened again and so I forgot all about it. Until recently when I bled a couple of times during sex. It was only light and so I didn’t do anything about it initially until last week when I bled really heavily during sex, with large clots too! Obviously me and DH were very concerned at this so I saw a nurse the next day who checked and said she cannot see the coil anywhere!
I am now waiting for a doctors appointment to find out what happens next (as far as I know the coil is still inside me somewhere unless it has fallen out without me noticing)

I have no idea if these recent issues have anything to do with the bleeding back in July or not.

I took a pregnancy test with the nurse and it was thankfully negative but I have no idea how long I have been unprotected for.

It’s all very strange but it’s safe to say I won’t be having another coil.

So following on from this for anyone who may stumble upon this thread in the future…

Saw the GP today who within about 10 seconds found the coil in its correct place, working as it should be! She said sometimes the strings can get tucked up which could be why the nurse missed it. But all is well and good.

She said that blood can sometimes collect and clot monthly even when you don’t have noticeable periods, and trauma (such as intercourse) can release it hence the occasional bleeding during sex. Nothing to worry about.
I’ve had sex a few times since the last time and no bleeding so what she said makes sense!

Hopefully if you’re reading this for a similar issue then it’s put your mind at rest like it has mine (although I’d always encourage anyone to see a doctor if bleeding regularly during sex to be on the safe side)
