After years of being on combined pill and then mini pill I'd finally had enough with side effects (mood swings and loss of libido) and decided to try the coil, my appointment for insertion was this morning. Not knowing which one to go for the nurse recommended the copper coil, to avoid the hormones altogether. I was warned about the possibility of heavier more painful periods but not the 50% increased risk of infections! (Thrush, BV) which I've just found out. I have been prone to these in the past and since having my baby (7months now) I've not had either and want it to stay that way!!! Not once did this cross my mind. I feel annoyed as i would probably have tried the Mirena coil first and used this as last resort if i knew. Whats everyone's experience with copper coil and thrush or BV? Im thinking if i do get either then to just have it removed :( i don't want to suffer with that!

Ive had a copper coil for nearly 6 years and it has been fine. I had more thrush pre- coil than with it.

Oh this is interesting! I had the copper coil years ago and it coincided me with having non stop thrush for months! I ended up having to have tablets prescribed to get rid of it and in the end just had the coil removed and the thrush cleared up immediately. At no point did a dr or nurse make the connection but it was clear to me. However, I haven’t heard of anyone else having this so I wouldn’t worry about it unnecessarily yet!

I had copper coils for about 10 years, no issues with thrush or BV. If you don’t get on with it your more likely to be able to have removed without making a song and dance, they don’t like removing hormonal coils early because of they’re more expensive.

This is what i am dreading, not just getting it once but reuccerance! I am a worrier unfortunately so pretty shocked at myself that it hadn't already crossed my mind, foreign object inside you would probably throw off ph balance Hmm but we shall see!
