MIRENA COIL EXPERIENCE

Ruby2328 · 30/06/2022 18:28

Due to get the mirena coil fitted tomorrow, what was your experience like, I’m after doing so much online research and now I’m abit reluctant to get it fitted now, I only had my baby 4 months ago, don’t want anymore babies but after being on the pill for years it made me quite depressed/have bad mood swings, I have a few questions
1.did it hurt to have inserted?
2.could your partner feel it during sex?
3.could you feel it inside of you
4.what side effects did you get after it was inserted? (depression, weight gain, acne, mood swings)
please if anyone can give their honest opinions on it, is it worth it, I know everyone is different but I’m just so scared now to get it, any advice greatly appreciated thank you

  1. Yes. My blood pressure dropped so much they almost took it out.
  2. No
  3. Yes, but only when I actively felt for the strings.
  4. Period was irregular for a while, took about 3 months to settle.

I had mine put in 3 weeks ago. I'm spotting and had a longer but steady and light period this week. The odd cramp. I actual feel quite calm, less anxiety in the week leading to my first period.

The spotting is annoying, but more so because only see my partner once a week so it it obviously there when we have sex. I've not checked for the threads yet.

I've had 2 kids, it was as painful as a smear.

It really is an individual response though.

I am on my third, and last Mirena, I won’t lie, insertion was very pain for my all three times, I would advise taking pain relief an hour before. Everyone is different, lots of women find insertion ok. But once it is in, you can’t feel it, DH can’t feel it. I had the Mirena to control my periods, that were really heavy, the Mirena certainly did that, very rarely have a period. I have gained weight, skin has been fine though, moods, always been moody 😂 and going through the change etc. I think the Mirena has been good for me. Good luck OP, I hope it all goes ok, and take it easy after the procedure, you may not feel like rushing about.

I've been using the Mirena since 2008.

  1. Uncomfortable, bit worse than a smear.
  2. Not that he's mentioned.
  3. No.
  4. Not much, if anything it stabilised my mood. I haven't had a period since 2009.
It's been the best thing ever for me. It's also reduced any menopausal symptoms I may have had - I'm 51 and not had any menopausal symptoms of note.
CrossStichQueen · 30/06/2022 18:44

I have had them since I was 30 and I am 44 now had one fitted earlier this year.

  1. No it didn't but maybe take some painkillers before hand as I know many do find it painful. Took her less than 2 minutes to remove the old one and insert the new one.

  2. No.

  3. No not unless I put my fingers up and feel for the strings.

  4. Didn't have any. Light periods for 2/3 months then my periods stopped but I still get the odd symptoms such as cramps, backache, insomnia and spots but nowhere near as bad as before the coil so it's a huge improvement for me.

ProbAmU · 30/06/2022 18:47
  1. Not at all, would even say it was particularly uncomfortable
  2. No
  3. No
  4. Hmmm, had a lot of abdo pain but could be other things, periods are lighter but last longer, although not had one this month. Mental health declined but again could be coincidence. I know several people who love theirs, most of them have no periods. Had mine 7 months
CheshireCats · 30/06/2022 18:51
  1. Yes
  2. Yes
  3. Only when feeling for strings
  4. Endless bleeding for 5 months. Agonisingly sore boobs.

Then it moved inside me. So when I wanted it removed, I then had to wait for a hospital appointment and have it removed under general anaesthetic.

I absolutely would not recommend Mirena to anyone based on my experience.

FleasAndKeef · 30/06/2022 19:06

1.did it hurt to have inserted?
No, for me it was a similar experience to smear but took longer. I took paracetamol and ibuprofen beforehand. Mild abdo cramps for a few hours after.

2.could your partner feel it during sex?
If he could he never mentioned it

3.could you feel it inside of you
No, except checking for strings

4.what side effects did you get after it was inserted? (depression, weight gain, acne, mood swings)
No side effects, except absent periods

I would absolutely have another mirena coil (had last one removed to TTC). There are also versions with lower levels of progesterone if you hormonal side effects have been a problem for you in the past- I think "kyleena" but don't quote me on it.

Eeiliethya · 30/06/2022 19:08

I was fine with everything but put on 3 stone in a very short space of time after having inserted, which is quite common.

Had it removed a year ago and still struggling to shift the extra baggage.

I wouldn't recommend one to a friend but that's just my experience, hormones affect everyone differently.

Ended up removing it myself in the end because I couldn't get seen at the bloody GPs due to COVID, which I wouldn't recommend but really was a last resort. I was literally blowing up by the day regardless of the calorie deficit.

Hurt getting fitted. 1st time felt it and actually cut the willy 😂😲 second time didnt feel it at all. No periods at all both times. 1st got it removed at hospital because it got lodged somewhere it wasnt meant to hence the willy cutting and second time got it removed due to acne that wouldnt go no matter what I did I was also working on a hot sweat ward so may have made it worse it it cleared after removal. No go for me however I know others who have it and it's amazing for them. You wont know until you get it and if it doesnt work out you can get it removed. I personally hated it though if I'm honest and I'm sure your wanting honest answers

Ruby2328 · 30/06/2022 19:33

Thanks so much for all of your replies, such a hard decision and it’s terrible how contraception always basically falls on women as their responsibility 🙄 I think I will give it a go and if it doesn’t agree I will get it removed, thanks everyone and if anyone else wants to share their experience go ahead :)

  1. did it hurt to have inserted? Mildly
2.could your partner feel it during sex? No 3.could you feel it inside of you no 4.what side effects did you get aft a little water retention. Some spotting for about six weeks. No heavy bleeds.
whyisiikethis · 30/06/2022 19:38

I've had mine in today, I want to have it out already. Had it in this afternoon, hurt like a bigger (took paracetamol beforehand), have taken para and ibuprofen but not helped, have bled since it's in (probably normal but I wasn't due my period for a week so extra bleeding is unwelcome) and I have been in a lot of pain since (like the worst period cramps ever). May well get it removed on Monday, if I do I'll get the implant.

SES88 · 25/07/2022 21:55

I had my coil fitted 3 months after giving birth. Took paracetamol before insertion so cannot complain about the insertion at all. I’m now 9 months in and although the bleeding has reduced I'm wearing a pad most days with spotting. I can tell when I’m having a period as it’s randomly heavier for about 10 days. Other side effects are spots for me! It’s all getting me a bit fed up now tbh. Not sure whether to persevere or have it removed!!
