Copper coil experiences??

lilaclover21 · 01/05/2022 21:27

Considering getting the copper coil.
The mirena coil made me bleed heavily for 6 weeks so I had it taken out. I'm now on the combined pill but I've put a lot of weight on for the short time I've been taking it and always feel bloated.
Considering the copper coil with it being hormone free but worried about the heavier period side effect as I work on my feet all day with little time for toilet breaks.
Any experiences would be welcome! Thank you.

I am also considering it I’m 8 weeks pp. I also am concerned about the heavier periods, how heavy are we talking sanitary towel wise? Is it the whole period or just 1-2 days of the period?
I would be concerned about periods on holiday as well. I have also been told periods can be more painful as well.
someone help us 😂 TIA

I had the copper coil. Really heavy periods - ended up in a&e more than once as was filling a pad every 30 mins.

also got pregnant.

So it’s a no recommend from me!

Tbh I'm about to get my mirena removed and a copper put back in. I can't comment on the period issue as I have endometriosis so always thought 2 week periods, filling pads full was normal. However the mirena coil is a nightmare, I have "adverse reactions" to progesterone and currently am lactating ever week before my period because of the mirena and because the doctor cut it too short I've got to wait to get it out at hospital! (Not pregnant BTW 😅). I didn't mind the copper in all honestly, I had my first one for 3 years with no issues before I choose to get it removed to have DD

I have had one for over three years now. My periods have increased from 3 to 5 days, but the lack of hormonal side effects have been worth it. Can't comment on the pads problem as I use a mooncup.

I've had copper coils for around 16 years now, only out to get pregnant. I have the 5 year one as the 10 year made me bleed heavily.

I would recommend it for sure - my periods are 4 days with only 2 of those heavy (no more than I would generally expect).

Getting it put in is painful but manageable.

@NauseousNancy

Also got pregnant- love DD to bits though so wouldn't change that.

Heavy all the days like twice as much as a normal period.

I wouldn't suggest it is the mirena made you bleed. Cant you take POP? Or implant?

Springdaisy · 01/05/2022 21:54

I had it in for 1 year after my last child. My period didnt get heavier, but the days increased. At the end of the year i was bleeding pretty much constantly. Most days very light spotting, but it was still uncomfortable to always wear pads and our sex life started to suffer.
I had it removed after a year.

After years of struggling with hormones from various pills the copper coil has saved me. I wish I'd tried it many, many years ago. My periods did get heavier but not drastically so. For me it's been a game changer.

Nailvarnish1 · 01/05/2022 22:05

How common is it that people get pregnant on it? Or is it down to it moving out of place ect?
I keep thinking it would just be easier and safer to go back on the pill but the low libido, neutral moods and dryness (TMI) is really putting me off.

MiseryWIthAStent · 01/05/2022 22:07

I have the copper coil, I've had it in for 5 years now, I had one changed previously too, it does make my periods heavier but they've always been heavy anyway, but I love no hormonal side affects, not having to think about taking a pill etc, I have had the pills before(made me very weepy!), the injection(weight gain) and the implant(where I bled daily for 18 months until it was taken out). I would pick the coil again. But everyone's body is very different.

seaduck · 01/05/2022 22:09

Yes, it's good for me. I had medium periods before but I would describe them as heavy now. However, it's manageable for me using a menstrual cup with period pants as backup for the first couple of days. Love the lack of any hormones.

RubaiyatOfAnyone · 01/05/2022 22:15

I’m on year 3 of a 5 year one.
cons:
periods longer (8/9 days rather than 6/7), time in between them shorter (26/7day cycle not 31) and weirdly heavy on approx day 6 not day 1/2 as with natural periods.

pros:
no hormonal side effects, feel like myself. No having to remember pill or condoms. No pain with periods (often bad before). Would 100% have it again.
