Has anyone seen a link between Mirena coil and depression?

Hi everyone.
I got a mirena coil fitted just over a year ago and have noticed slow changes to my mental health over the year. I just feel like I have constant pms and am generally in a low mood most of the time. This has also caused tendency to cry very easily at most things.
At first I thought it was me being silly as I heard the mirena coil is just localised hormones in your uterus but I do think it has affected me.

Has anyone else experienced this? and does it improve at all or should I just get it removed?
Thanks in advance :)

I haven’t tried mirena, but had very serious depression when taking combined pill, tried 2 different ones, same results and have refused to touch any hormonal contraceptives since.

When I stopped taking it felt much better in a few days.

1000%

Yes i did both times i had a mirena. I seem to be very sensitive to progesterone, my own and even more so any artificial progesterone. Even though doctors swear blind it only had localised effects it made me feel like i had permanent PMT AND it dried my breastmilk up overnight (something else that isn't supposed to happen), i had to have that one taken out after just a few days as DS3 was so distressed at being weaned before he was ready and my milk started to return the next day!
I stuck it out with my second one for various reasons and it did seem to get better after it had been in for a long time, ie getting near running out time but i was also heading for menopause by this time.
At the time i had a lot of stressful things going on in my life so it was hard to work out what was causing mood issues but with hindsight i can see the patterns caused by hormones, my own and artificial ones from contraception including the Mirena. It wasn't as bad as the Mini pill though and no periods was good.

I felt very very flat indeed on the Mirena and had it removed.

I struggled a little bit for a few months after having the Kyleena (similar). Also with hormonal acne. But it got better. However if you think it's causing problems for you and it seems to have been a while... I'd have it removed and find another method.

My friend found it made her very depressed.

Yes! I felt really flat all of the time and was massively anxious in the days leading up to my period. It was a very effective contraceptive as I wasn't a particularly pleasant to be around! I also had spotting every day for the first six or so months and then continued to have regular periods. It did improve my period pain but ibuprofen and a hot water bottle does that too.
I felt better within days of it being taken out.

thanks for your replies. this has definitely confirmed it must be the mirena that's making me feel like this, its a shame as I have already tried the copper coil and it was great because there was no hormones but I couldn't cope with the heavier periods.
this has also put me off trying any contraceptive pill incase I have the same reaction... may just take a break from any for a few months and see how im feeling.
