Mirena coil can’t be retrieved

So I went back for the second time to have my coil changed. It was an appointment with ultrasound because the strings are not present. The coil is there, but it was impossible to remove it - excruciatingly painful. So I’ve been referred for a hysteroscopy but I’m wondering what to expect. Any experience?

For a hysteroscopy I suggest you should have GA. You'll be fine :)

I had a hysteroscopy with coil removal and insertion as well as a few other things done while she was in there under local recently and if you haven't got a high pain threshold I would also recommend general.

It was bearable but local can't reach all areas and so pain was unavoidable. Other than that it was fine, done quickly and aside from a bit of cramping I was fine afterwards.

Thanks - I’m normally quite resilient but think I have some residual nerve damage in the area from a dreadful forceps delivery. And I have sciatica at the moment which I think was set off when she turned the probe to look at my ovary. Basically when she tried to remove it I had extreme pain in my hip and coccyx. Maybe a general will be best.

What was the waiting list like?

Of course a general is best, it's fucking dreadful what women are expected to go through

BigSigh2021 · 02/02/2022 19:19

Please read some of the many threads about hysteroscopy on here. Many say it is barbaric not to do under a GA.

To be honest my experience today was pretty awful (not the staff, they were wonderful), but I might have managed if there were some gas and air even. They did offer local for the cervix but I think I was experiencing referred nerve pain because of injuries relating to a past instrumental delivery and a sciatica flare up.

I had a hysteroscopy, biopsy and mirena fitted due to peri excess of bleeding. Tbh the only thing that hurt was the biopsy which hurt a lot. The rest was just uncomfortable.

I got my mirena removed under GA. Wasn't offered any other method

Watching with interest as I’m currently waiting for appointment for removal under ultrasound. I’ve got a pretty low pain threshold (made worse I think by what they are doing and perception of pain). I’m overweight too and have read that ultrasound particularly difficult in overweight women?

I had coil with missing threads removed and a new one inserted this morning and I'm in absolute agony right now and pain killers are barely touching the sides. The pain getting it out wasn't great but the new one going in I feel totally violated the pain was excruciating and I couldn't hold my tongue between yelps to screams there was lots of swearing. Neither were my first coil either but never before have I been in such pain without any pain relief being offered.

Just wanted to update here. I saw the gynaecologist today and he had a jolly good go at getting the coil out (with hysteroscopy) and was unsuccessful. Looks like I’m one of the unlucky few who have a partial perforation (the IUD is embedded in the uterine muscle. Apparently this is likely to have happened around the time it was inserted and is made more likely by the fact that I was only 6 months postpartum and breastfeeding when it was placed. So it’s a GA for me, sometime soon.

they gynae dr was really nice and seemed genuinely irritated that the IUD had thwarted him. The procedure itself was not too bad. I asked for a little local in the cervix as that was bad last time, and apparently I am an ‘exceptionally tolerant’ patient.
