Giving Mirena another try

Last time I had a Mirena fitted it was agony, seriously hurt for 3 months then went awol. I swore never again.

My GP is v keen for me to consider Mirena again (currently on microgynon but too old and fat for it really). She says the extreme pain at fitting, ongoing pain and expelling it all suggest there was a problem when it was fitted, so no reason to think they would happen again.

I’m really nervous though. Just wondered if anyone had any words of wisdom?

If you don't want another mirena coil then I would say stick to your guns. It doesn't sound as though your GP has any idea why the problems occurred first time around, which isn't exactly encouraging.

I had a bad experience with the mirena coil. It was put in to control heavy flooding periods rather than for contraception but had the opposite effect. I had increasingly heavy bleeding every day for 13 long months before I could get it removed.

I've since found that the mini (POP) pill was an option for me (an overweight 55 year old) and am rather irked that it was never mentioned. I could at least have controlled it myself if it hadn't suited me rather than having to rely on reluctant doctors (and they can be very reluctant to remove the mirena coil).

Thank you and sorry to hear you've also had problems with the Mirena. Thing is, I do love the idea of it, if only it did for me what everyone says. It didn't help that I had it fitted just before first lockdown and then spent the whole of that time in a lot of pain because I couldn't make an appointment to have it removed (could have gone to A&E I suppose and in hindsight perhaps I should have). At least that shouldn't be the case this time.

Mine was fitted not that long before the first lockdown too (December 2019, but they kept saying "give it more time").

So I still had the evil thing come the end of March 2020 and was trapped with it. That is the only reason I put up with it for as long as I did. In the end I reached 13 months an after some real haemorrhages I phoned the GP and absolutely insisted that it was removed. They did it this time and it was such a relief.

Personally I would try the progestogen only pill first and see how you get on. If this doesn't work out for you then maybe have another think about the mirena then. At least with the mini pill you have the choice to just stop it yourself if it doesn't work out.

I have had one for years...is great. Absolutely no periods at all.
Had it changed twice now. Supposed to last 5 years and I know if the hormone is expiring as I start spotting and have it changed. Very little discomfort in fitting and don't know it's there really.

Works for us as DH won't have the snip after two of his friends/colleagues had awful after effects and were off work for weeks and still not right so I'm supporting of his choice given how easy the Mirena is. I think it works compared to unnecessary surgical procedures but get that it doesn't suit everyone
