Mirena coil removal after 5 years

I'm having my Mirena coil removed on Monday. I think I'm more apprehensive about it being removed than I was having it fitted. I'm not having another one fitted. I'm not sure what to expect and I suppose everyone is different. But will it hurt? Will I bleed straight away? Will I be in pain for the rest of the week?
It has been really nice having it and I'll be sad to see it go. I've been pain free and no periods for the whole 5 years. But I want to give my body a break from it and see what happens.

I've heard that removal is much easier and less painful than insertion. Although I had to get mine out under general anaesthetic as the strings went awol and couldn't be removed in the normal manner

PoloPrincess · 04/12/2021 20:19

Oh heck, I had to have an ultrasound when I had it fitted to make sure it was in place because the srings had disappeared. Wait and see then.

I had to be referred to a specialist clinic to have mine removed because strings had got tucked up behind the cervix. Had a nurse and a GP try with a string retrieval stick thingy at my local surgery with no luck.

Despite this the removal was absolutely fine. Quick and not painful, although obviously a little uncomfortable. Much much better than having it put in.

I had mine removed & replaced on Wednesday - managed to work myself up about it, got there early, put 2 hours parking on the car. Well, the Dr was so amazing she completed the whole thing in under 5 mins and I’ve had much MUCH worse smear tests - I hope you get a similar Dr!

Greentime101 · 04/12/2021 20:36

And I’ve been told in the past I have a “shy” posterior cervix etc etc

JackieWeaversZoomAc · 04/12/2021 20:39

I've had 2 removed - both absolutely fine. Hope it goes ok.

SweetBabyCheeses99 · 04/12/2021 20:56

I was just told to cough and then the nurse pulled it out, didn’t even feel a thing.
If you’re not TTC though I’d just have another one fitted at the same time!

Timely thread for me. Trying to arrange to get mine removed as it’s 5 years now, but the strings are awol and so I have to wait and see where they will send me.

I’m also confused about having another. It’s been pretty good all in all, but I have quite a low sex drive these days which I’ve read can be mirena related. I’ve no idea if it’s that or general exhaustion from having young kids though.

rumblypumbly · 04/12/2021 21:13

Mirena is painless on the way out. Dont sweat it.

PoloPrincess · 08/12/2021 09:19

It didn't go well, doctor couldn't find the threads and then the nurse came to have a go and she couldn't find them either. I think they spent half an hour trying which wasn't much fun, now I feel bruised and sore. I've been referred to the family planning clinic. And now I'm definitely not having another fitted, I hate being ferkled about with.

I got referred to the gynae unit at the hospital and they couldn't get it out either. That's when I got referred to get it out under general anaesthetic. They did do ultrasound and xray to check it was still there

PoloPrincess · 17/12/2021 12:11

The referral letter to gynae came through this morning, the first available appointment is in April.

So just a heads up to anyone reading this and having their coil removed, do it sooner rather than later because if you need to be referred then it's a long wait.

I had to take the mini pill until my appointment as the mirena had expired

PoloPrincess · 17/12/2021 17:15

The price of condoms has gone up since I last bought them 😆

So my 5 years was up last month and the coil will still be in situ until April which is when I've got my hospital appointment. I'm using another form of contraception now. If the hormone has run out, does that mean my periods will start again?

OP posts:
dementedpixie · 18/12/2021 09:04

I dont think the hormones run out right away so they may not start right away.

Sunflowergirl1 · 27/12/2021 08:09

You don't need to use another form of contraception when the hormone expires. The Mirena is still effective but you start having periods again.

dementedpixie · 27/12/2021 08:12

You dont know when the hormones will run out and you would ovulate before you had a period so you would be advised to use other contraception

HelloDulling · 27/12/2021 08:15

The hormone doesn’t run out on the dot if five years, so your periods may be a while before they return. Obvs use alternative contraception though.

glitterelf · 27/12/2021 08:18

Mine should've been removed in 2019 but the threads were missing cue an ultrasound to check it was still in position and a lengthy wait which thankfully it was but then wham 2020 global pandemic hit cancelling any chance of removal !! Guess what it's still not been removed I've had another ultrasound again still in place and have an appointment scheduled for the 24th of February at the hospital for them to attempt removal. It will have been in for 7yrs and 11 months by then. You definitely do need another form of contraception though I'm currently on the mini pill even with all the hassle of trying to get this bugger removed I'm hoping to have another inserted straightaway.

whiteroseredrose · 27/12/2021 08:28

If I remember correctly Mirena is licensed for 7 years in Finland where it was developed. So there is enough hormone in it for at least 7 years.

I'm on my 3rd and found both fitting and removal really easy.

dementedpixie · 27/12/2021 08:35

I had to get mine removed under general anaesthetic as the strings went awol. I didn't get another one!

DaisyMum40 · 05/01/2022 19:30

Oh god, I was thinking of getting a coil, but all these comments about missing strings and having to undergo proper procedures to get it removed is right putting me off!
