Trust a vasectomy?

Hi.
We have 4 children, and our house is full.
We are absolutely content with our family size and hope from here on to get to put our energy in to enjoying growing up with them.
DH is booked for a vasectomy but I am nervous of the possibility of it spontaneously reversing.
Should I get the coil in as well to be absolutely sure or am I over reacting?
Any advice / experience of this is greatly appreciated

The size of the tubes they cut out of my husband I felt quite reassured! They also test it’s worked a few weeks later with a sperm sample.
Apparently the instances of it ‘not working’ are often associated with the woman having an affair (this is anecdotal but from a doctor)

PlanDeRaccordement · 11/11/2021 23:06

Reversal is extremely rare theses days. They snip out part of the tubes and then cauterise the ends so no chance of them joining back up.

My DH had a vasectomy 17yrs ago...and so far no pregnancy. Have not used any back up contraception.

4 kids here then vasectomy too.

10 years and no accidents.

Just be careful right after until you get your spermcount checks done.

Wotagain · 11/11/2021 23:10

Whatever you do, don’t jump the gun! Wait until your husband gets the all clear sperm samples. Thus speaks the voice of experience.....

Almost 2 years and no accidents here.

Gloomandglow · 11/11/2021 23:15

4.5 years later and no accidental pregnancies here either Smile

For me, the draw of dp having the vasectomy was no more contraception ever again. So I think if I was still wanting to use contraceptiin after the vasectomy it seems pointless dp having the vasectomy and putting dp through the agony of a vasectomy.

A vasectomy is only likely to fail if you have unprotected sex during the first few weeks when there is a chance that there are still live sperm present in the tubes. It's why they recommend you use protection for a short while after or until they have done the test to make sure its worked

8years here - definitely no little MM’s running around -despite ‘trying’

mrsfollowill · 11/11/2021 23:28

DH was done 11 yrs ago- he had to produce 2 samples with zero sperm and was given the 'all clear' - it took a while if I'm remembering it right but then from then on no other contraceptives used and no pregnancies- it is very reliable once you have the final all clear - there is just the danger period once it is done and waiting for the sample results Grin
DH was desperate to make sure it 'still worked' (which it did!) so we DTD shortly after (5 days post surgery) so still used contraception.

5 years after my husbands vasectomy (and clear tests) I fell pregnant. He has since had another one and we have a surprise baby!

ScatteredMama82 · 11/11/2021 23:33

6 years here and no other contraception used since he got his second sample ‘all clear’ result. like others have said, wait for the sample results before you trust it!

Cocogreen · 11/11/2021 23:40

23 years after - all fine here!
I did have a friend who made her husband wear condoms for a couple of months even after the negative sperm test.
I know probably a dozen men who've had it done no problems.

saleorbouy · 11/11/2021 23:41

If the procedure is done correctly and then he gets a sample tested after 40 ejaculations (12wks) to check he's firing blanks then you'll have no chance of getting pregnant.
It's great not having to worry about pregnancy and contraception again. Makes sex much more chilled.

Thanks everyone. I feel a bit more reassured now.Blush

So two failed vasectomies and two babies?
