Experiences having Mirena coil inserted

I had the Mirena coil inserted this week and it was very painful, "a small pinch" the doctor said but it was so painful it made my eyes water and since then Ive been bleeding on and off (although not heavy) and cramping. I understand this is not uncommon but just wondering if this is comparable to other people's experiences when having it first put in?

After two babies I thought I'd be used to being poked and prodded down there but it really shocked me how much it hurt.

I totally agree OP, I am on my 3rd Mirena, absolutely bloody agony for me on insertion. I genuinely found labour less painful. This Mirena is my last and will take me through the menopause, at least having them removed is painless. It has been worth it not to have the flooding though.

I found it very painful too. I have had three kids and was almost led to believe I shouldn't feel it but it was way more painful than I was expecting. I felt a bit funny for a couple of hours afterwards. I have unfortunately had near constant bleeding and spotting for the four months since it was inserted but at least I don't really notice any difference around when my period is due so I'm hoping that means when the spotting stops I won't have a period or only very light ones. My gynaecologist said it can take up to 6 months for it to settle down.

The pain of insertion was excruciating for me and I bled for six months with my first. I’m past menopause now and have had my final one removed which got lodged and the pain from that extraction is beyond my ability to put into words!
However, I had extremely heavy periods and when they eventually went away it was heaven. I think Mirena is fantastic. What you’ve experienced seems very commonplace from my experience.

Not just me then, very pleased to know that removing it wont be as bad! Was starting to think the doctor may have been down playing that too!

Omg @Lentil63, thats sounds awful! Really hope mine doesn't get lodged. Did you know before you went to get it removed that there may have been a problem?

I think it varies, I didn't find it painful at all, a pinch sounds correct, but others needed gas and air

alwayswrighty · 02/09/2021 19:23

Omg it was very painful. Worst is its not doing what it was supposed to for me (stop periods) so I might have to have it out 😪

Africa2go · 02/09/2021 19:30

Had 1st one fitted under GA as part of some investigations so no pain but when it came to it being removed and new one inserted, it was hell. Sheer agony (and I've had 3 children including a breech (bottom first) birth). I took 3 people though and they left me for 20 mins in between because they knew I needed a break from the pain.

Africa2go · 02/09/2021 19:31

It took 3 people though to remove/ insert, not that I took 3 people with me!!

Oh dear, am starting to wonder what Ive let myself in for!

Also, I had it fitted as a contraceptive as offered by the nurse. I thought 5 years and no worrying about a daily pill was a good thing, however the doctor said it was usually for heavy/painful periods, she carried on anyway but made me wonder if Ive made the right choice. Did anyone else have it just as a contraceptive?

Can't deny, Mirena insertion hurt like hell, at a gynaecology clinic. I 'mentioned' getting a coil as an alternative to Progesterone (I was at a post-menopausal bleeding clinic).

They cracked on. The nurse failed to get it in so the gynae came along and did it. It was momentarily excruciating.

Am a bit worried as I have another 2WW PMB clinic appointment tomorrow. I'm not worried about endometrial cancer, as I'm sure the bleeding is from a fibroid; but if they start considering messing with the coil OR doing a colposcopy- nope.

Kales29 · 03/09/2021 16:44

I've had 2 children, both born by c section.I felt hardly any pain (maybe a little but not too bad) and zero bleeding afterwards. I've had it twice and quite lucky I guess.

My close friend had it and felt terrible pain too. It's crazy how we are all different.

I've always been told my cervix isn't in the best position either. I think I'm just lucky.

wanttomarryamillionaire · 03/09/2021 17:19

I found it uncomfortable rather than painful. However the bleeding and cramping afterwards wasn't pleasant and it took about 6 months for the bleeding to settle down.

samlovesdilys · 03/09/2021 17:24

Mine was as contraceptive. It was really painful being fitted and the first took almost 9 months to settle, had random bleeding etc throughout that time - but since it has been great - no bleeding at all. Persevere if you can is my thought!! Before that I had an implant and the removal of that was horrific and I still have a scar!

rosie39forever · 03/09/2021 22:09

Depends whose fitting it, my first by the GP was awful I had to lie down in the surgery for half an hour afterwards because I fainted. The second one I had done by a consultant gynaecologist because the threads had disappeared, he used loads of local anaesthetic removed the old one and put in the new one in less than 2 minutes and I felt absolutely nothing, I almost cried with relief.

cricketmum84 · 03/09/2021 22:11

I hated it. Was told it would be a quick sharp pain, I was practically clinging to the ceiling!

I could feel it every time I got up to walk and begged them to take it out after 3 weeks.

hopeishere · 03/09/2021 22:13

I had to abandon it as it was so painful!
