Coil fitting after birth

The fact that many posts here are about women's traumatic and painful experiences of coil fitting, suggest that we are receiving poor quality and sometimes inhumane care when it comes to coil fitting.

I am 5 weeks postnatal and would like a coil. I've had one before and it was the most painful experience of my life. More than broken bones and failed induction, not that women should have to justify.

It was only the fitting that was a problem, as the coil was an excellent contraceptive choice for me, but a fitting experience like my first would stop me from getting it again. This could be avoided with simple and cheap pain relief.

What I want to find out is, where can I find a health service that will offer anaesthesia with coil fitting.
It's not OK to assume that Paracetamol and or ibuprofen/codeine is enough for all women for coil fitting. Some providers are offering local on the cervix for fitting, but I am struggling to find out where I can go for this.

In my experience it depends on who is fitting the coil, my first one was done by my GP who apparently was very experienced and it was horrendous, no anaesthesia, no pain relief. I have a really high pain threshold and am by no means Squeamish but the pain, pressure and shock made me pass out and had to lie down in the surgery and have my heart rate monitored.

I had it replaced last week after 5 years and because the threads had disappeared I was referred to the complex contraception clinic.
I had a consultant gynaecologist do the procedure, I had loads of topical anaesthetic with the option of anaesthetic injection if it was at all uncomfortable (I didn't need it) and I kid you not I didn't feel a thing apart from a small amount of pressure and he was so quick it was over in minutes.

The lack of training and empathy in some of the health care professionals allowed to perform what is an invasive procedure is frightening and as women we are supposed to just put up with it.

I had a coil put in 6 weeks postpartum and honestly didn't even feel it. Having a coil after having had a baby is a very different experience.

I think it it is sometimes easier for women postpartum if they have been through labour and had a vaginal birth. This is because for most women the cervix won't ever go back to the pre labour and birth state. I didn't go through labour and had an emergency section, so my cervix is the same as it was pre baby.

Sorry to hear about your first experience. And yes I totally agree, provider experience is a huge factor. I would want to know that whoever does a fitting is doing them all the time. Having the option of anaesthesia should be standard and I so glad you were given some and offered the option of more of you needed.
I just want to find out who offers this, as it seems to be on an individual practioner bases and hard info to find out.
Can I ask how you ended up with a consultant gynaecologist?

@Z4545kp
It was a city centre sexual health clinic, I was judged to be a complex case as my threads had curled up so needed help to relocate them. (I too have only had an emergency c section) chatting to the gyne he said that he and his colleagues from health trust are on a rota at the clinic to do procedures (coils and implants that may not be straightforward) .
He did add that he did many non difficult cases too .

I only became aware of the clinic chatting to one of the moms at my daughters school who'd been through the same thing and got a referral from my GP .
