Sex within 7 days of Mirena fitting

Go easy on me please. I realise I've been stupid. Had a Mirena fitted a few days ago. On day 7 of my cycle. Was told to abstain for 7 days. I didn't. Had sex on day 2. No additional contraception. Read online that if the mirena is fitted within 7 days of the start of your cycle you're protected immediately. Do you think it would be sensible to take the MAP?

They told you to abstain for 7 days ? I ve had the mirena fitted this morning and they told me to abstain for 4 weeks....seems a bit exaggerated, also said no swimming for 4 weeks because of risk of infections.

Loopielu · 19/08/2021 12:10

I definitely wasn't told that and there's nothing online that I've read that says that either.

I think the reason for not having sex is more to do with the risk of infection rather than the risk of pregnancy. As soon as a coil is fitted an egg would be unable to implant, thats why they can be used as a form of emergency contraception for up to 5 days after unprotected intercourse.

Bizarre Nhs days if fitted within the first 7 days of your cycle then you're covered straight away and of not, to use other precautions for 7 days. Doesn't mention 4 weeks or avoiding swimming Confused

Mirena can't be used for emergency contraception only the copper coil

7 days is specified to give the mirena time to work and to thicken the vaginally mucus

I was also told no sex or swimming for 7 days due to the risk of infection. If I didn't want to become pregnant I would take the map just to be sure. I think Mirena increases the risk of ectopic so wouldn't be worth the risk of not taking it for me.

PP was told no sex or swimming for 4 weeks! Bit OTT; I could understand 1 week but not 4

@dementedpixie ; I am not in in the UK, so maybe in my country they have different recommendations or they like to be overly cautious. Could also be because apart from the mirena I had a d and c to remove a polyp. I thought I misheard the gynae when she said 4 weeks ( I was still under the influence of the general anaesthetic ) but before I was discharged, a nurse repeated the same thing.

dementedpixie · 19/08/2021 18:44

Maybe its the D&C that has prompted the 4 weeks advice then rather than the mirena

YouveBeenLittUp · 19/08/2021 19:51

Yeah it sounds more likely the d & c that's needed the 4 weeks rather than the mirena. Did you decide to go for the map op?
