Tell me about vasectomies on the NHS

Specifically how your partner (you) went about getting one or if you ended up going private.

Husband and I are both in our early 40s, young (2) child conceived through private IVF after lots of heartache. We've recently decided to close the door on a second for loads of reasons and we'll be donating our remaining embryos.

Chemical contraception sends me batshit crazy and my copper coil is making me bleed though EVERYTHING and I need to have it out. I can't cope with having another miscarriage so H went to the doctor's today to enquire about a vasectomy only to be told "we're not ticking the right boxes" to be referred for the snip on the NHS.

If the NHS referred you what on earth did it take? And if you went private, what did it cost you and what was your referral pathway?

TIA

My ex asked his GP. I had asked my obstetrician to sterilise me after the birth of my 4th child, her reply was I absolutely will if you want me to but said to my ex it is far easier for you to do it and the recovery and risks are minimal in comparison. He agreed and went to the GP. He was referred with no issue and the op was done 2 months before the birth of my last child. He was 33 and absolutely no one questioned it.

@Beachbabe1 honestly that's what I thought would be the outcome of his appointment today. But according to him the doctor was pushing conceptives for me rather than surgery for him. I'm so disappointed.

So with your partner was it literally our family is done and they referred?

My OH’s GP did the same and gave him a long lecture about me taking the pill. Thankfully OH wasn’t deterred and said no I do really want one, he now has the date for his. But it does make me livid that GPs suggest fairly invasive hormonal medication for women when the man is clearly coming of his own choice to request a vasectomy.

In our case there were no issues. DH mid 40s, one child. A phone consultation with the GP, then a referral to a local surgery. All done within four months, including the waiting list. That’s in the west Mids.
