Stuck for contraception

I've just had a coil removed after having the most horrific time with it. It has so negatively impacted mine and my families lives, I shall never have one again.

I can't have anything progestogen only as I had headaches, so GP won't put me back on the mini pill. I've been on cerezette before but it completely got rid of my sex drive.

I'm nervous about condoms as they don't seem to work for us. We've had several breakages and falling off, one of which resulted in pregnancy (after map). So would rather find something else.

Husband is fully prepared to get the snip but we're not 100% sure we've finished having children. So in the interim we're trying to work out what to do.

I also have heavy and irregular periods so don't really think that natural family planning method would work for us.

Is there anything left that would work for us, or shall we just give up for now? 🤣

Is it not the combined pill you can't have due to headaches? There are other mini pills that aren't desogestrel based which cerazette is.

Injection or implant are options but as they are longer acting they are hard to stop if they don't suit

tumbleit · 15/02/2021 14:56

You can have the mini pill, not the combined. I have same problem. Freezer te made my periods so irregular it was awful, and the coil well don't get me started that didn't work for me either so I'm in same position as you sort of, except I'm pregnant right now, and pretty sure I don't want more so considering having my tubes tied now. Try another mini pill? That is what I'll probably do once I've had this baby

tumbleit · 15/02/2021 14:56

*cerezette thats meant to say not freezer lol

Diaphragm?

Rarely recommended these days, and you need to be comfortable with and competent at the insertion process, and diligent about spermicide

daisyjgrey · 15/02/2021 15:01

I think the implant is progesterone only but the patch is both?

You're in a rubbish situation. I am similar, but luckily I have a cycle like clockwork so use NFP and withdrawal.

Have you tried going to a family planning clinic? They normally know more detail/can offer better options than the GP (and normally have more time to do so).

daisyjgrey · 15/02/2021 15:02

@scaevola Oh yes I'd forgotten about that, there are a few more modern diaphragm options around now.

SpamIAm · 15/02/2021 15:26

If you can't have progesterone or the copper coil, and don't want to use condoms then I think it's just the more unusual barrier methods available to you - diaphragm or femidom. I just go for abstinence personally 😂

Chasingsquirrels · 15/02/2021 15:33

I've had a Diaphragm for a couple of years and am really pleased with it (have used a mooncup for about 14 years) but during that time I've had more and more difficulty getting it and my GP (the only one trained to fit them at our doctors) has recently retired so I've been referred to the serial health clinic in the nearest city which would be a significant inconvenience normally and just hopeless atm with covid.

MaverickSnoopy · 17/02/2021 22:18

Thank you all! I'm very grateful for your advice. I'm still quite unwell from the coil, tired and overwhelmed with a lot of other things going on at the moment and you've all been really helpful.

I think I'm muddled up. I can have cerezette, which is progesterone only, but not the other one, which also has oestrogen. Not sure if that changes anything.

I've just had a look at the diaphragm but although the concept looks good, I'm not so keen on the statistic re pregnancy. I fall pregnant very easily and I think there would be a big chance that I could fall pregnant.

I think the suggestion of family planning clinic is a good idea. I'll make an apt to talk it through in more detail. I feel stuck and aside from abstinence, I'm contemplating going back on cerezette for a while, because aside from losing my sex drive, it feels like the only option that's safe and familiar. However I will look at the other suggestions too.

Cerazette is a mini pill. There are other mini pills that aren't desogestrel based and have a 3 hour window instead of 12 hours.

Sound like you can't have the combined pill.

SpamIAm · 18/02/2021 15:02

As demented says, there are lots of other mini pills you could try. There are also injections and the implant.
