Vasectomy side effects

Hello just wondered if anyone's DH who has had the snip had any long lasting effects?

DH has offered to get it done now that we are done having children. Goodness knows if NHS still doing them. But wondered if there were any risks

Pill doesn't seem to be agreeing with me anymore and after being off the pill for a long time TTC DD2, I've realised having a natural cycle isn't so bad after all!!!

Sorry I know natural cycle can be bloody awful and was for me when younger but seems alright at the moment for me!

My DH had his vasectomy on the NHS. Absolutely fine, recovered within 2 weeks, no side effects at all!

rhowton · 11/12/2020 21:48

Vasectomies are generally really safe. My DH had one and we went out shopping in the afternoon. If it's successful, and he heals well, there are no side effects.

FindHungrySamurai · 11/12/2020 21:48

There are some risks unfortunately. DH had some dreadful side effects and it was looking a bit dodgy for a while but fortunately he made a full recovery.

Pyewhacket · 11/12/2020 21:57

Google PVPS. Frequently untreatable. I work for the NHS and wouldn’t let my husband have one. I was sterilised.

TravelDreamLife · 11/12/2020 22:03

My DH had none apart from being a little sore for a few hours.

Ensure he gets the post- testing done to ensure it was successful. Anyone I've known/heard of who didn't had the side effect of getting their partner pregnant. Also follow doctor's post procedure instructions. DH's asked his surgeon about his success rate & was told only one failure (pregnancy). The bloke didn't listen to instructions & rode his bike home after surgery.

NeurologicallySpeaking · 11/12/2020 23:36

Surely PVPS is far less risky than risks of female sterilisation? I mean if DH reads more about it and doesn't want to do it then that's obviously his choice: I don't think his idea to do it has yet been backed up my research.

DH had a vasovagal episode after but was fine, apart from delaying the rest of the clinic. I bought him a large strawberry milkshake on the way home. Only sore for a day or so.

EvilEdna1 · 11/12/2020 23:41

Anesthetic didn't work so caused a lot of pain and operation was abandoned with only one side done. Then developed haematoma in testicle and could barely walk for 2 weeks. Then ongoing pain for months. Obviously didn't work either.

DramaAlpaca · 11/12/2020 23:41

DH had his 22 years ago. He had it on Friday, took it easy over the weekend and was back at work on Monday. No side effects whatsoever.

AddictedToCrisps · 12/12/2020 16:10

My DH was very sore afterwards and needed about 3/4 days of resting. After a week he still had to walk a bit slower but this eased. He was fully fit after 2 weeks.

Normalmumandwife · 13/12/2020 07:28

DH considered and decided not to have it done. Two friends/colleagues had done and had pretty awful problems necessitating some weeks off work and one with residual effects. . Apparently about 10% can have complications. We thought about it and basically thought better to avoid the risk of what is an operation.

I'm lucky as I have a Mirena which I'm happy with and don't have periods so will just keep having it changed j til no longer needed

Thanks am starting to think maybe not a good idea. I am terrible for getting heavy bleeding and/or breakthrough bleeding and most forms of contraception seem to have that as a risk.

I don't like condoms the few times we've had to use them either

My DH recovered very quickly, no side effects.

Changedmynameagain1 · 13/12/2020 07:50

My DH had one, he was fine. Overdid things a few days after and ended up feverish, that was his fault though as he didn’t follow the guidance properly- no heavy lifting for a reason!

Theworkwitch · 13/12/2020 07:53

Most people will say no issues, but as pp says 10% have problems and it's likely more as men don't generally come forward.

My dh had problems but luckily recovered after a few months, still has low level pain years later. I think he was lucky judging by some accounts I have read.

yikesanotherbooboo · 13/12/2020 08:14

Vasectomy is the most effective form of contraception .
It is true that about 10 % of men don't make an instant recovery but by 3 months that is down to 1% or so. I am not belittling pvps but you could compare that to complications of any surgical procedure or indeed to childbirth.
Having said that a mirena provides very good contraception and a huge reduction of menstrual loss. If it doesn't suit you it can easily be removed so I would strongly consider it before going down the vasectomy route. An implant also provides good contraception but a lot more women have troublesome bleeding and as there is more progesterone like hormone there is a higher chance of related side effects. If you don't have heavy periods a copper coil is also worth a try. Many women have mirenas fitted in their 40s as treatment for heavy periods or as part of HRT so that should be borne in mind.
My DH has a vasectomy to share responsibility and because it is effective. He had no problems afterwards.

DeadButDelicious · 13/12/2020 08:27

DH had one a couple of years ago, he made a fuss at the time about the needle for the anaesthetic (he was fine, he just didn't want a needle in his testicle) and wandered about like John Wayne for a couple of days clutching his bag of peas for grim life but after 3 or 4 days he was absolutely fine. The most long lasting 'side effect' was him complaining about his pubes growing back 😂.

He did have to take a full two weeks off work as he has a manual job and that's what the hospital said he had to do. But all in all it was very straightforward. He had his post op test and got the all clear and that was that.

BounceyBumblebee · 13/12/2020 08:36

Dh was thinking of having one but he read they can cause dementia in later life so now doesn't want one.

I was going to try the contraceptive patch. I'm done with the pill too. On it since a teen and then when came off to have kids realised how much it had changed me mentally.

Ffsffsffsffsffs · 13/12/2020 08:41

The only side effect my dp had was no more babies and loads of fantastic sex with a non-hormonally-overloaded partner.

Crack on OP's dh!

OakleyStreetisnotinChelsea · 13/12/2020 08:57

Dh was fine too, very quick recovery. Yes there are at times complications but most contraception had side effects and risks and so does childbirth so why is it that we're happy to take on the risk ourselves but not the precious men?

NeurologicallySpeaking · 13/12/2020 17:26

Might look into Mirena then. As I said, he was the one who suggested it so he is happy to take the risk but if there is a way to avoid surgery will look into it.

Childbirth bloody awful for me but necessary(!)- sounds like there may be another option to try that is less risky

thumpingrug · 22/12/2020 22:54

Had mine done 26 years ago. Only side effect was more spontaneous sex. Best decision we made.

rwalker · 25/12/2020 19:34

I had one worse decision of my life went wrong swelling and pain for months .
Very long story short NHS offered to reverse or remove a testicle to try and solve on going pain problems.
Opted for reversal 13 years on pain nowhere near as bad but still get bouts of pain that can stop me in my tracks . Unable to rely on it for contraception due to reversal procedure.
When you look into it problems are a lot more common than you think about 1 in 10

BlueStarRose · 25/12/2020 19:40

Side effects - I nearly killed him. Took to his bed for 3 days after. Needed ice packs and painkillers. Wouldn’t mind, but I had a 4th degree tear and 2 c sections and I wasn’t given such assistance. I also remember a vivid argument where he refused to lift the car seat about 5 weeks post-op. I reminded he went back to work 2 weeks after C section no 3 and I had to do a school run - so lift car seats and drive. I told him if the vasectomy didn’t work I would have my tubes tied as I could not cope with the theatrics again!
