Mirena couldn't be fitted

Saw my GP today for a Mirena fitting, which has been recommended because I have very heavy periods and my iron stores are low even with ferrous fumarate twice a day.

First my cervix was hard to find, that was a good 10 minutes of looking, moving the speculum in and out, me getting up and jiggling.

Then, once found, the tool to measure my womb wouldn't go through the cervix. I had some relaxing gel added, then she tried again, but it still wouldn't let the measuring tool through. She thinks there might be some scarring from a previous c-section.

I've now been referred to a specialist clinic for them to try. Has this happened to anyone and did it work the next time? It was so uncomfortable and I'd sort of set my heart on seeing the back of these awful periods. I feel really down now, which is very unlike me.

I suspect that the doctor was inexperienced in fitting it. I e had it done 3 times now a d. Ever a problem.

The specialist clinic will basically be someone more experienced. How the fuck they couldn't find your cervix I do t know.

Next time should be easier and it's worth it once fitted

That happened to me, and it was fine in the end, and periods disappeared.

I had two attempted fits by our GP, with much discomfort and felt really painful for a few days after ...... when the GP admitted defeat, I was referred to the "complicated coil" clinic at local hospital and had it fitted in under 5 minutes. They did it by ultrasound, used loads of local anaesthetic with a long spectrum, and had my legs in a very odd position to bring my "reluctant" cervix forward. I didn't feel any of it.

I've had them in for over 20 years, I'd add. They are miracle cures for heavy bleeding, so it's worth persisting with. If it's any consolation, they come out in seconds!! My only gripe is that you can't go to the local sexual health clinic anymore where they are so experienced in fitting, it has to be your GP who doesn't fit enough to be at that same level.

Thank you for your replies, that's reassuring. I was wondering if I, or my cervix at least, was a freak of nature.

I really do need a miracle cure for the bleeding, I'm so fed up of it.

And it hurt. And still hurts now. Grr.

I had a gp try to fit mine. She really didn't seem very experienced. Honestly didn't hurt, but she Couldn't get it in. Referred to the specialist clinic. Was less than a minute, in and done. I even asked if that was it, didn't feel a thing.

My gp took my mirena out but then couldn't get the replacement in. DOSH consultant slid new one straight in in no time at all. Sometimes the cervix just clamps shut or spasms

Daffy2020 · 22/01/2021 00:21

Couldn’t get mines in! Tried several different lengths of speculum, was then told I have a tilted cervix whatever that is! Got an appointment to try again but honestly terrified to go back lol

Elouera · 22/01/2021 00:27

Do you have a retroverted/ tilted uterus? I do, and used to work in family planning years ago. A retroverted uterus can make visualising the cervical os (opening) very difficult. Have you ever had a vaginal birth, or all C-section? Not ever having a vaginal birth can also cause issues with inserting a coil. No impossible at all, but more tricky sometimes. Have you had one fitted before?

Blushingm · 22/01/2021 11:36

Mines tilted but the dr at the coil clinic had no problems

CornedBeef451 · 22/01/2021 11:41

I think it can depend on the fitter so don't worry, someone with more experience will probably do it easily.

I had the opposite problem where it went in really easily but then fell out a few months later. I'm now worried I have a loose cervix!
