Am I being too hasty? I want the implant out and it’s only been 6 weeks

I had it for the first time and whilst the first few weeks were great, no period, but my skin had reacted awful to it - really bad acne on my back and face. By week four I got a period for over a week, had a few days of nothing and now another period!

My friend said she rarely stopped bleeding and hated it, but my sister never had a period on it.

Do u think things will level out or should I give up on it now?

I was previously on the pill.

As far as I know, any hormonal contraceptive methods should be given 3 to 6 months before deeming it unsuitable. Anything less than that GPs are quite reluctant to remove. Ring your GP and discuss your side effects, sometimes they can prescribe short-term pills alongside the implant just to calm things down. Trial and error really, different contraceptives just suit some better than others. Are you on any other medication that might affect its efficacy?

It'll just be starting to level out now. You get a spike of hormones at first.

Thank you @Doggywoof @thedevilinablackdress . My skin is a mess, it hurts, and I’m just gutted, I don’t want to constantly bleed, no one does. I just wanted something longer term.

If you do end up getting it out be prepared for a lot of pushback from your GP.

I wanted mine out a year early (had it for two) and I honestly think it'd have been easier if I was asking for my leg to be removed.

ElementalIllusion · 13/10/2020 07:59

They are awful and have more side effects than any other hormonal contraceptive but are pushed to the point of being forced on women over every other type of contraception.
(I know because I have worked in the field)

Yellow is right though, you will have to fight hard for it to be removed as your gp will definitely refuse.

I got the implant when breastfeeding. It was fine for a year and then when I stopped bf I bled for weeks at a time with it and had regular thrush when I wasn't bleeding. I suffered through it for 8 months before asking for it to be removed. NHS were reluctant to remove it and then covid happened so the clinics weren't doing routine appointments. I went privately to get it removed and feel so much better now. Wait the 3-6 months to see if it settles and then if you can afford to get it taken out privately if the GP won't do it.

thedevilinablackdress · 13/10/2020 08:14

I don't find it awful @elementalillusion. I'm on my 5th. Not everyone is the same. Crap if people can't get them out tho.

ElementalIllusion · 13/10/2020 10:24

@thedevilinablackdress you are lucky then, during my time working with contraceptives we did studies and found over 70% of people that have the implant have moderate to severe side effects ranging from excessive weight gain to prolonged and very heavy periods.

The only thing with worse statistics was the iud.

thedevilinablackdress · 13/10/2020 10:48

Not without side effects but thankfully manageable for me. And fewer migraines than when I was on the pill. Going back, I might have made different choices for contraception than pumping my body full of hormones. Not sure what the best choice is tho, and the burden is pretty much all on us women.

I was contemplating the implant and went for the Depo injection, first was OK, second I felt a bit il/off for a month or so but didn't pay much attention however after the third one of these I was SO ill, it was like a build up of too much hormone. No periods, but every other symptom. Took almost a year to get back to normal.
So no, I don't think you're being too hasty.

beachywalks · 17/10/2020 19:54

What about the non hormonal coil?

YeOldeTrout · 17/10/2020 19:58

I had recurring spotting... I think you should give it at least 3-6 months before giving up OP. I thought that was standard advice, see if it settles. I had mine out after about 18m.

Ruthxx · 23/10/2020 16:57

@Thermo my friend had this and then the symptoms settled after a while. You should check out www.theldown.com - there are thousands of real-life reviews and information on all the contraception. They are a super cool platform that have helped me understand different methods!
