Mirena coil - can it run out early?

Hi!

So I’ve had the Mirena coil for 3 1/2 years. For the first 3 years it’s been amazing no periods or problems at all! Over the last 6 months I have started spotting every month which has gradually become heavier then this month BAM a “normal” period accompanied with period pains, breast tenderness etc.. Which I haven’t had since before the Mirena was put in.

I’m a little concerned as from what I’ve read Mirena thins the lining of the womb hence the having no periods etc I’m worried it could possibly fail. The other thing that concerns me is I had my smear 6 months ago and the nurse said she couldn’t see the Mirena at first and actually said “are you sure you have one” then said “oh it’s ok I can see it now the strings are curled right up” 😳

I have contacted my GP this week as I’ve had what I would say is left sided ovarian pain (dull aching) but I was basically laughed off and told that this can be normal 🤷🏽‍♀️

I’m just wondering has anyone else experienced this or has theirs ran out early (the Dr told me this cannot happen)

I’d appreciate any response!

Thankyou 💗

I would be asking for a referral for an ultrasound to check the coil hasn't moved. Then if that is clear I would insist on it being removed & having a new one or choosing a different method of contraception. Be prepared to be fobbed off & if the pain gets worse go to A & E.

She is right that it can't "run out early" but that doesn't mean that everything is ok. If you are having pain and suddenly started your periods again then maybe this is working for you anymore. It could have moved or it could just be that it isn't having the effect that you want anymore.

I'd ask them to remove it and switch to something else (if anything else works for you).

And as the PP said, DO NOT let them patronize you and fob you off. Stand your ground and insist that they remove that thing as it is causing you pain.

It can't really 'run out' early but it can move and therefore stop working (due to not being in the right place) before you have it taken out. My sister had this and she got pregnant, so did my sister in law and 2 friends, all 4 had the mirena. Sister in law lost her pregnancy and ended up having to have investigative surgery to find the mirena, but sister and 2 friends had successful pregnancies and the coil came out during the birth. Because of this I opted for the copper coil instead which lasts for 10 years, worked perfectly for 5 then I had it taken out to try for a baby! Definitely gonna have it put back in after birth. Phone your GP and get them to investigate it properly. If it's moved you may get pregnant or causing damage internally and needing surgery.
