Nexplanon implant - Side effects?

Can anyone help me? 😬
I’ve had the implant since early March after having an ectopic on the pill - I wanted something more reliable and for some peace of mind.

However since being on it my weight has ballooned, my bra size has gone up 3 cup sizes and I just feel so miserable!
I have severe bloating - to the extent colleagues have asked if I’m pregnant!

I also bleed all the time which i know is normal and just need to give that time but it’s the weight that’s really bothering me!

My Dr agreed my side effects can be caused by the implant - but a nurse has told me weight gain is absolutely not caused by the implant.

Has anyone ever had these side effects? I’m thinking of having the copper coil fitted instead as it’s non hormonal.

Thanks in advance xxx

Hi! I'm on my second implant, first implant made me bleed constantly for 6 months towards the end but I actually lost weight in the two years I had it in, went from 7st to 6.5st. I swapped to injection and my weight ballooned. I'm now on my second implant and it's made me loose weight again.
I think every body reacts differently to different hormones and no two experiences are the same

I had the implant and, for the best part of two years, it was a nightmare. Eratic bleeding, constant thrush, didn't feel like myself/felt a bit numb, zero sex drive and a constant itch in my arm. Doctor insisted the bleeding would settle (it didn't) and that the thrush was unrelated and told me to persist. I was miserable! I tried taking the pill at the same time to regulate the bleeding which worked for as long as I would take it but then as soon as I stopped it became unpredictable again. I gave it the best part of two years before snapping and having it removed. Felt better almost immediately - periods and mood returned to normal and no more thrush or clawing at my itchy arm. Had the copper coil fitted at the same time as having the implant out. Nurse tried to dissuade me and suggested going for the mirena as it should stop my periods but I just wouldn't take the chance of more hormonal misery. It was definitely the right decision. Other than my first period with the coil which was an absolute nightmare (I was so ill and bled so heavily I stayed off work), it's been a dream. I've always had periods which arrived as clockwork, were relatively light, over in a few days and no cramps. I'm just about back to that now and it's amazing. Best decision I've made.

Hi girls,
Thanks so much for your replies :)
I was lucky enough to be seen pretty much straight away and had the implant out 3 days after writing that post!
I too was advised to have the mirena but chose the copper coil too, so far extremely heavy bleeding - but zero cramps and I’ve lost 6lbs already! Must have been water weight- I immediately felt better having the implant out
Funny how it affects everyone differently xxxx

I have zero sex drive and want it out; haven't got around to doing anything about it yet!

Ironic that the reason I'm a bit nervous about it as that I definitely don't want another baby yet...but don't want sex now anyway because of zero sex drive!

I think I will ask for the copper coil after another baby, but just go for condoms until I've had another baby!

Haha I know right!!
I used to moan to my friends that no wonder it’s such an effective birth control - your either bleeding or you don’t want it anyway 😂

So far apart from the bleeding I’ve not got anything bad to say about the copper coil - I’m looking forward to feeling more myself being hormone free :)
We have 2 children already and am fairly certain we don’t want anymore so I’m still trying to persuade DH to get to the chop shop Hmm xx

Fingers crossed it settles down for you. After the first month it was totally manageable. It's so strange - I get a tiny bit of spotting which lets me know when I'm about to come on then it's honestly like a tap switches the period off at the end as I go from medium to nothing overnight which is great. Incidentally, I also switched from tampons to using a mooncup at the same time as getting the coil and that was a great help as well. I'd read on various posts that they could manage heavy flow well so thought I'd give it a go after the first horror month. There were also some people who said they'd experienced shorter and lighter periods when using it. Not sure how that works but that's certainly my experience - probably a result of the coil tbh since I switched at virtually the same time (who knows!?) but I actually prefer it to tampons now anyway so stuck with it. The two combined have been life changing - now a massive advocate for both 😂
