I've recently gone back to combined pill (yasmin buying from Superdrug) but doctor says I'm too old and would prefer coil. I don't smoke and have bmi of 21.

So far I've tried
Cerazette and other mini pills - bled all the time

Copper coil: awful. gave it a year. Flooded for days on period. Had to take days off became anaemic.

I'm trying to persuade husband to get the snip and he is almost coming round to it. I'm very wary of Mirena due to reading nightmarish stuff on here and my experience with copper coil was that it was hard to persuade them to take it out.

For those of you who didn't get on with mini pill, was Mirena the answer? I'm not too bothered about pain when fitting

you are not too old for the combined pill if you are not overweight, don't smoke and have normal blood pressure. It can be used until age 50 if you have no other risk factors

I'm your age, not overweight and not smoking. Tried minipill but was bleeding irregularly. Didn't want any coils etc. Was prescribed combined pill Gedarel. It's a low dose one so often prescribed for "older" ladies..... not that i consider myself older. But you get the idea 😉

I’m 40 and have used mirena coil for around 10 years with no side effects other than losing my periods entirely Grin - just to offset the bad stuff one hears about it.

Dilbertian · 02/07/2020 08:02

I didn't get on with the mini pill, but have had no issues with the Mirena. I no longer need it for contraception, but still have it as part of my HRT.

Thanks for the replies- I will investigate these

I'm 38 and have had the mirena for 5 years!! Its great, only had spotting every month. But I have had a few lumps in breast, but benign good be a coincidence though.

Bingowin · 13/07/2020 00:26

I have a Mirena....marvellous for me. No periods forever more 💪🏼

Waleshasgonecompletelycrazy · 13/07/2020 00:39

The Mirena has been a complete game changer for me too! I love mine

Heytheredelilah99 · 13/07/2020 14:36

I wish mine stopped completely but they never have in 5 years but very light now

snappycamper · 13/07/2020 14:49

Had mirena for 3 years now, 100% positive experience. Give it a go, you can always have it removed if it doesn't suit you. It took about 3-4 months for me to be totally converted but I will have a coil now until menopause

Goostacean · 13/07/2020 14:53

I believe I’m right in saying GPs are incentivised to encourage long-term contraceptives. Mine was (metaphorically!) ramming Mirena down my throat when I called to ask for the minipill postpartum (am 29 though). Haven’t had any experience of the coil, but that may explain your GP’s persistence.
