Pregnancy Vitamins

I am trying to get pregnant. I am overweight, I am aware that's not ideal. I am focusing on healthy eating rather than the size of my clothes.

As I am overweight I was told to take a prescription dose of 5mg folic acid. Now you can't take normal pregnancy vitamins along side this can you as they also all contain folic acid (in much smaller doses) and there are warnings everywhere not to take too much of it.

So as someone who is taking prescribed 5mg folic acid what are people's recommendations or is your knowledge on how to get in the best amount of all the other vitamins you are advised to take during pregnancy?

P.S. I live in the UK, just incase that makes a difference

Well a balanced diet should contain most vitamins and minerals but as a back up, could you find a multivitamin and mineral supplement that doesn’t contain folic acid?

Just wondering if you are upping your exercise too? Pregnancy, Labour, birth and babies and children are tiring and you want to be fit to help you deal with it all Smile

Have you found the Conception section yet? You’ll find lots of other MNers who are also TTC.

Good luck OP Thanks

Agree with Julie

This is Family Planning (i.e. contraception) topic. I think you meant to be in Conception?

I did take 5mg of folic acid alongside normal pregnancy vitamins and was told it wasn't a big deal. That said, the only one you need really is Vitamin D so you can just take that separately.
