Which Coil to get

So long story short I get debilitating migraines from the combination pill because of the estrogen even though I'm on the lowest dose possible, and the progesterone only pill doesn't work I have constant spotting every day. My doctor had told me to get the coil but not recommended which one as they don't provide the service I will need to go to a clinic .
I was dead set on the copper coil as it's hormone free but have heard horror stories about extremely heavy periods women being basically anaemic each month , wondering if I should consider the mirena but again it's progesterone so wonder will it be the same as cerazette co start spotting ?? has anyone any experience of either ?? Advice would be very much appreciated.

I've tried both.

Before the coils, my periods were regular and quite light.

The copper coil gave me the heaviest periods I've ever had, leaking and cramping. Along with monthly ovulation pain which went as soon as I had it out.

The mirena has been a dream, no periods whatsoever and no side effects. It's been in six years now and it's been a struggle to get it out. My contraception days are surely done by now!

I’ve had a copper coil since May...it’s fantastic! Slightly heavier periods maybe, but nothing that bothers me. When it was fitted the doctor gave me a calendar to mark any dates of spotting/bleeding, and if it was too much for me I could go back and try the Mirena instead.

I think it’s very much a case of giving them a go and seeing what works for you.

I prefer the copper. Periods absolutely fine and I don't want hormones suppressing them (or my sex drive). They aren't particularly heavy at all.

The thing is, if you don't like whatever you do choose you can have it taken out quite quickly. In your shoes, if you are very sensitive to hormones I would try the plain copper T first and see how you get on, but there are pros and cons either way. Some women struggle with the hormonal aspect of Mirena, some don't.

I love my copper coil. My periods are heavier, but the periods I had on the pill weren't "real" ones so this may be my reality.

No synthetic hormones, a normal sex drive. No having to remember to take a pill every day. Fantastic!

Very happy with my copper coil. Hate hormones. Periods were heavy for a bit but not painful.

bgegmum · 29/11/2019 21:22

Had both. Copper one was great apart from heavy bleeding and pain. It settled down after a year or two. Due to my periods now being extremely irregular, various pains I'm certain not coil related been for scans tests etc etc. The doctor advised before being referred to gynaecology to change my coil to the marina to see if it helps. Now on week 3 or 4 and have been very light bleeding every day more than spotting but not enough to wear a pad at night. Apparently you get spotting for 3-6 months (they said the same with the copper one with heavy bleeding but went on for longer) so I won't know if it's worked till after 6 months.
Basically there is no best one. Everyone reacts differently and you have to deal with trial and error

Mirena gave me terrible low mood days.
I now have had copper for last three years. Slightly heavier periods but I can cope with that.

I have Kyleena which has lower hormone levels than Mirena. You can get in on the NHS but I had to specifically request my GP for it (as they default to either copper coil or Mirena) and I justified that by wanting lowest systemic hormone levels possible but didn't want to risk heavy periods with the copper coil. Another positive is that it's smaller than either Mirena or the copper coil so less painful to insert. My GP actually called it the virgin coil. Grin

Been happy with it, so that's another option for you to consider OP.

whiteroseredrose · 29/11/2019 21:33

I'm on my 3rd Mirena and love it. I've not had a period for 15 years. My GP originally 'sold' it to me as fit and forget and she was right.

@apples actually worried the mirena wouldn't be strong enough I'm ok with progesterone. cerezette is 75mcg and had spotting all the time as it didn't seem to be strong enough and mirena is somewhere around 20mcg a day yet so many ppl say they don't have periods. I just I'll just have to pick one and try it no way to know until I try 🤷‍♀️
