Copper coil, bleeding after intercourse, bad pains

To cut a long story short. Ive had the copper iud for coming upto a year. My periods were normal before that. Anyhow ive been getting these pains coming upto my period, during my period and just after. Its no pain ive experienced before and ive only had it during the time ive had the iud. Basically its located very low far right. Almost towards thigh where ur knicker line is. Its a sharp stabbing pain, a rather bad pain ide say. Not ur regular period pain. And ive also had spotting abit after the period ends along with the same pain. Then all goes quiet untill the next time my periods on its way. The doctor is sending me for a scan to see whats up but im quite worried. I initially thought it was ovarian cyst but she said no they don't cause bleeding. But from what I read they actually can cause problems during periods. Also im clear of any infections etc. Can anyone help put me at ease. I sometimes get spotting after intercourse also. Is this all because of the copper coil? Or is something wrong with me im so worried

Can't give you a define answer for it however I can tell you my story so you know your not alone.
I got my copper coil in 4 years ago. Fine for 2 years except painful periods and a lot of bleeding. After that I missed periods a couple times. Last year i started bleeding and spotting all the time, was getting ovary type pain on left side, a lot of pressure before my periods that cause pain when going to the toilet (both 1and 2), periods irregular mostly lasting 1.5 weeks to 2.5 weeks and about 40 days between them (really unusual for me), frequent thrush put on the pill to "reset" everything. Didn't really work. Doctors checked hormones, stds, for cervical and ovarian cancer, sent for a scan everything is clear however I think it's a hormone issue due to spots under jawline that only appeared with these issues. Pressure eased off so did pain during sex but still having the other issues
They advised me to change to the marina coil before referring me to gynaecology as that is apparently what the gynaecologist would tell me to do. So had it changed about 3 weeks ago. I was on my period at the time. Bleeding stopped the day after, started again 3 days after that and has no sign of stopping.
Woman's reproductive health takes a major backseat unless you have a serious illness. If all these things come back clear like mine and taking coil out does nothing. Push for gynaecology. That's my next step

Oh i totally hear you about the heavy long lasting periods. Ive had a coil in before my son was conceived and i also suffered from the same heavy bleeding alot of jaw acne etc. But all that cleared up after my son was born and for a year my period was fine. But had this new coil in for a year and its like everything has just gone down hill. I dont get pains during intercourse or anything like that its just spotting the day after. Also when i do get spotting through the month ( when the period isnt due) i get period aches and i instantly know that when i go to the loo ill have spotting. Its such a worry. Ive just had a smear and waiting the results on that also

I've had 2 copper coils. The first one dislodged itself after 8 months and I had the second one removed. I had constant cramps with them both, especially after sex. I had scans etc and there was nothing physically wrong with me, but my body really did not like the copper coil.

bgegmum · 26/11/2019 13:13

CurbsideProphet what did you use after the coils? Did you get the marina or opt for a different contraception?

Fluffyduck88 · 26/11/2019 13:25

I wonder if mine has moved out of place. I hope it is that and not anything else.

OP not sure if this will help, but my experience has been similar to yours. I had the copper coil for 2 years, and I had similar pains. Really painful pains on one side (I was rushed into A&E a couple of times as they thought it was my appendix). Had scans and everything came back clear. I was referred to gynaecologist and it was clear. I eventually took the coil out - even though every medical professional told me it couldn't be caused by it. Had it removed, the pain has disappeared. I don't know if it wasn't fitted well or just didn't suit me. Hope you're ok Flowers

CurbsideProphet · 26/11/2019 15:20

@bgegmum I can't have anything hormonal anyway, but after my 18 month misery of copper coils I wouldn't have tried a mirena coil anyway!

Fluffyduck88 · 26/11/2019 16:15

Oh i hope that's the case here. Yes the pains ars terrible. Not ur typical period pain but a stabbing pain which can have you doubling over. But it only comes around period time. Also i noticed once when i coughed i got the sharp pain for a minute then it subsided. Ive already been given clear for any infections etc which i knew i didnt have anyway. Its just awaiting my smear results now

I originally thought ive got some type of cysts that are bursting during my period the pains were so bad. And funnily enough on the right hand side which is where the appendix is located. Im not supprised they thought it was your appendix. Ive thought about this previously but ruled it out because its only around my period time it comes.

@Fluffyduck88 I had scans and appointments etc because doctors kept telling me that the copper coil cannot cause any pain or other physical problems. When I had the second one removed I had gone to a random family planning clinic in desperation. The nurse there was very "old school" said that despite its popularity some women just do not get along well with the copper coil.

A few days after having it removed the pain, cramps, and spotting disappeared and I haven't had any further problems (aside from normal period pain).

Fluffyduck88 · 26/11/2019 21:59

I think maybe time to get it removed then. My previous i had in for around 6 years. Didn't have this horrible pain with it though Appart from the jaw acne and heavy long periods, I managed.

Hi everyone. I know this is an old thread but I'm hoping some of you will see this! I feel like this is really important information to get out there that nobody warned me of when I got the copper coil inserted. I had the copper coil inserted four years ago and all was fine - I actually raved about it to my friends, thinking it was the best form of contraception ever!! Eight weeks ago, I found out I was pregnant - yes with the copper coil still in place. My coil hadn't moved, hadn't dislodged at all, I could still feel the strings, etc. But I was the 1% and became pregnant against the odds. What followed that was a horrific few weeks. Myself and my partner were really excited about becoming pregnant but the risks were VERY HIGH with the coil in situ. Basically I had a 50% chance of miscarriage before week 16 and if I made it past week 16, there were further risks (premature birth, infection, late miscarriage, etc). I unfortunately suffered an extremely painful and very scary miscarriage at week 10 - which involved passing large clots, two weeks of incredibly painful cramping and an infection (all due to the coil). I know there are lots of women that rely on the coil for contraception but becoming pregnant while on the coil really is so dangerous and can happen. In fact there was another woman in the hospital bed beside me undergoing the same procedure as me, following a miscarriage due to the copper coil. I feel like this information is not out there enough. Nobody told me the risks when I got the coil inserted and I wish they had. Be careful ladies!!!!
