Hi ladies! I'm sure this next question has been asked millions time before!! But...... what birth control pills do you get on with? Didn't get on with ? Side effects?
I'm 42 thinking about going back on the pill, ideally one that doesn't cause weight gain or turn me into a grumpy wench!! I don't want IUD that kind freaks me out . Nor injection or implants , I want something I'm in control of . Thanks in advance xx

This should help with 'rules' for over 40s www.womens-health-concern.org/help-and-advice/factsheets/contraception-older-woman/

Zoelly and Qlaira are marketed as being more suitable for less young women as they contain a more natural oestrogen. Cost more though Hmm

Many doctors want to play safe and give you progestogen only.

If you have any meno type symptoms looming, Mirena + oestrogen patch/gel is a good combination.

ps I had femodene for years but it unfashionable now because of a slightly higher stroke risk. I was ok on it but had increasing meno symptoms from 45-49.

Thanks for your reply, surely if your pre menopausal, it's the estrogen levels which drop, so I don't understand why doctors would suggest progesterone only??!

Progestogen only is ok if you smoke, are overweight etc and it can be used up to 55.

Combined pill is fine up to 50 if you are in good health and don't smoke, but it has bad press for various scares, so some err on the safe side and tend to reach for pop.

Oestrogen goes up and down when you are perimenopausal www.menopausematters.co.uk/article-perils-of-the-perimenopause.php There is little progesterone in the months you are not ovulating which can lead to heavy periods and random periods.

I think this is why Mirena is thought to be a good thing - it is used to reduce bleeding by providing constant progestogen in the appropriate place. It can also be used with oestrogen as hrt*(needs to be replaced 4 yearly) And it provides contraception. 3 birds(or bird substitute), one stone.

I thought nothing about meno and stayed on the pill to 49, was taken off by the doctor and given cerazette which gave me awful constipation and I hated, had a couple of years without just using condoms, loads of muddly bleeding then started hrt tablets at 52. I chickened out of the coil - you cannot get it at the FPC after 50 anyway and the GP that did them retired.

*you always need progestogen/progesterone with hrt if you have a uterus to prevent any risk of endometrial cancer and to control bleeding.

Hope this is not too much in one go! It is worth thinking about menopause issues with contraception issues so that you can be prepared.

If you have no risk factors like obesity, smoker, high blood pressure, etc then combined pill should be ok. If you do, then mini pill, implant, injection, coil would be alternatives

foreverastri2 · 19/01/2019 05:42

I'm a non smoker, I had injection many many years ago I was grumpy had backache it was horrible!! I've been reading up in qlaria pill any experiences? X

I took cilest (combined pill) for decades and was fine although I still had a lot of bleeding especially when I first went on it. After my baby I went on cerezette (mini pill) as I was expressing and that has been so much better. I have very few side effects if any and no bleeding.
