Talk to me about the coil / IUD

I'm considering having the coil fitted as I'm not planning on trying for a baby for another year. I don't get on with hormonal contraception so the IUD sounds good but I'm wary of side effects such as continuous bleeding. I normally have heavy periods so don't want this to be made worse.
Please tell me your real life experiences. Smile Thanks in advance

Anyone? Or is it that bad that no one has it?!

I've had two copper coils and loved that there were no hormones and got on very well and when not ttc will have another one.

As above pp, I’ve had two copper iuds. I think some people worry about the copper, but I had no trouble all. There are possible side effects so do read up. Bit painful being inserted and removed. By far the easiest method I tried. Didn’t notice much change to periods. Hopefully you’ll never look back!

I had a copper coil fitted about 18 months ago. It's been brilliant and I love it. No trouble, even hours after it was fitted it was fine and very minor cramping for maybe an afternoon. Slightly heavier periods and I am on iron supplements but frankly I'd rather that than synthetic hormones.

It hurt being fitted - obvious to say I know, and I've had two babies - and I'm not going to enjoy having it removed but that said mine lasts for ten years so I'll be 49 by then and the temporary discomfort is a very small price to pay for it!

Recommended.

Ah thank you for the replies, that is very reassuring so I may book myself in for one now. I don't mind the heavier bleeding as long as I don't get any long drawn out periods and lots of bleeding in between.

I got the Mirena fitted about 6 weeks ago. Spotted for a week or so and haven't had anything since.
Good luck with whatever you choose.

Waddsup12 · 06/01/2019 22:42

Had a Mirena for 8 years, well, 2...

For me, best thing ever. Best fitted by someone who fits a lot of them. My nice lady told me they can never tell who they suit and it's just a case of try it and see. I stopped having periods and PMS, so find life much easier.

Plus all the other benefits, so no worries about contraception, etc.

I got the mirena last week after a year on the depo injections previously. Had not a single drop of bleeding since it's been fitted (no periods on the depo that might be why) so glad I don't have to worry for 5 years now!

Asmallrole · 06/01/2019 22:48

I got pregnant with an IUD in place.
I bled every day for 10 months with a mirena.
My experiences !

Calvinsmam · 06/01/2019 22:51

I’ve had the Mirena for about a year, I dont get any periods and because I had three implants before that I have been period free for around ten years.
I like the Mirena but I get freaked out if I think about it too much and I do get horrible cramps from time to time but no periods.

Abouttime1978 · 07/01/2019 21:48

I had a copper iud fitted three weeks ago.

It hurt going in, but only for a minute. I had cramps that day and some spotting.

I'd just finished the pill so my period arrived as normal.

I've had the odd bit of cramping since but no major problems.

Waiting to see how my first period goes but so far so good.

Went in to talk about getting it fitted and came out with mini pill, cerelle. Just seemed like a better option as I do want to start trying for a baby next year. The doctor was more keen on this so giving it a go, glad to hear most people had positive experiences though Smile
