Natural family planning vs coil

Hi, I have two children and after being on and off the pill for years I finally came off it for good a year and a half ago. My skin has improved, my migraines have gone but it took my cycle over a year to settle down (which shows how much the pill messed it up I guess!) I have looked into vasectomy for my husband but there seems to be common side effects he isn't keen on. I considered the coil but again the side effects put me off, and I am reluctant to have it fitted and have hormones in my system again, although I know many people get on really well with it. Ive looked at natural planning a bit, using temperature and whatnot but I don't really know enough about it. Does anyone have any info about it or a good straight forward website about it? Or does anyone have positive experiences with the coil to reassure me? Any info on either would be greatly appreciated, thank you for reading x

The coil or iud is just copper, no hormones. The mirena or ius has hormones. I went for a classic coil and no regrets - it improved periods.

I've had both, and have been happy with both, although had very heavy periods with the copper.

I thoroughly recommend a coil l 👍

I have a copper coil and I love it. I had it for 6 years before I had it removed to have a baby and then had a new one fitted 6 weeks after birth.

My periods were a bit heavier but they were already heavy to begin with so it didn't really bother me! I went from 6/7 day periods with 2 very very heavy days to 7/8 day periods with 3 very heavy days.

My skin improved massively, my mood was vastly improved, no depression, no self destructive behaviour and when I wanted a baby I could conceive straight away.

I have a copper coil. No hormones. No sideceffects. No pregnancy. No problems!

Hi. As a family planning nurse and previous abortion counsellor, only use natural methods if getting pregnant would not be a problem for you.

The Mirena coil has minimal progesterone that releases far less hormone than either tablets or Depo (injection)

Each woman may react differently to various means of contraception though the copper coil usually makes periods heavier.

A good book on contraception that's not patronising is by Dr John Guillebaud. Good luck.

So your DH is fine with the ‘common side effects’ you will have to deal with no matter what contraception you go ahead with?

Taking Charge of Your Fertility by Toni Weschler is a good book. It’s quite thick, but very readable.

Try and be a bit less obvious furtile love.

Don’t use any “natural” methods of getting pregnant would cause you massive problems. Can you be arsed checking your temp everyday?

It’s a bit shit your husband doesn’t mind you putting up with actual, potentially dangerous side effects (ie blood clots, certain cancers etc) and has let you be responsible for so long but he won’t bear any of the side effects himself.
