Contraceptive pill options for high blood pressure

Hi, what options do I have here? Is it just the progesterone only pill? I have taken that before and my skin was awful on it, took months to settle. I am on medication for high blood pressure and my blood pressure is ok now since starting it. I feel like I have tried everything else and my only option other than this will be sterilisation. Help!

Mini pill, depo injection, implant, copper coil, mirena coil, condoms, diaphragm/ cap(if you still get them)

Natural cycles

Have you tried different pops?
What were the problems with the other forms of contraception?
Can you see a doctor with fp experience to methodically go through your choices?

You have my sympathy, OP. I was on the combined pill for years with no issue. It was great for my PCOS. Then I turned 43 ish and started having issues with high BP. The GP wanted me to switch to the POP but I was wary about the hormones with my PCOS. So she reluctantly agreed to put me on BP pills and let me stay on the combined pill.

That wasn’t great. I had the “Ramipril cough” which was the worst thing ever and didn’t ever get better, so I had to switch to Losartan (no cough finally!)

Then I got a clot in my leg. Nearly ended up having to miss our annual holiday, scans, injecting myself in the stomach. Pain. Horrible. GP told me to come off the pill immediately.

After a few weeks I switched to the POP and all was ok for a while but over a few months my hair started to fall out. There seemed to be a bit of a link with that and the Losartan so I came off that hoping that my BP wouldn’t be too bad on the POP. It was better than on the combined pill but still not ideal.

So I just decided to come off the POP too, and yes, my Bp is now back to normal. So it seems hormonal contraception is no longer for me.

Unfortunately as a result I am now paranoid of getting pregnant with condoms so we rarely have sex.

So I’m watching this thread with interest . I don’t want a coil. DH refuses the snip. So I am just praying for an early menopause and I can stop worrying! Grin

Pretty much the same as you curly hormonal contraception seems to make my bp worse although I haven’t tried the pop in years. Coil left me in pain for months until I got it taken out (GP said it wasnt the coil causing the pain). Condoms are uncomfortable so avoiding sex at all at the moment. DH also won’t get the snip. Not keen on diaphragm as I don’t trust it and am terrified of getting pregnant. Might just have to abstain for the foreseeable future 😩

Op look at natural cycles. I was sceptical before but 11months in and I couldn't be happier. No hormones!!

Owletterocks · 31/07/2018 11:33

Thanks. I will look it up but I really don’t want to fall pregnant so not sure if I would trust it!

Nor do I and I haven't.

However I did fall pregnant on the pill.

CurlyhairedAssassin · 31/07/2018 23:18

And did you take it exactly as you should? No d and V? Or medication that would interfere with absorption?

duckyfuzzz · 01/08/2018 06:06

I took it perfectly within the same ten minute window for 5 years. The obstetricians response "yes it happens".

Ducky, that’s really scary to hear! Just to be one of the unlucky ones...
