Contraception. Annoyed with doctor.

So I’m 36 years old. For last 2 years my contraception has been depo 12 week injection.
At last injection nurse said before your next injection just see the doctor and have a review and check he’s happy for you to continue.
Went to the doctors today for a water infection. Firstly he did not check my sample, temperature or blood pressure. Gave me antibiotics and said hospital will test urine. This took all of about 3 minutes.
So whilst I was there I asked him if I could continue to get the depo injection. He asked 1 question. Do you smoke? Yes I do. Then no you cannot continue to have the injection. So I asked what I can use. His reply copper coil or barrier methods or address the smoking.
Now I know smoking is extremely bad. Don’t do it. But I do.
I’m annoyed because there must be other method of contraception I can take. Plus he didn’t check my weight, bp nothing. Now if he’d said sorry you’ve had your appointment on the water infection you need to make another appointment to discuss this. I’d have said ok.
Tbh I’m not really sure the point t of posting other than that I’m p*ed off. Surly there are other methods of contraception I could use rather than condoms or coil. Even if I’m 36 and smoke.
Now I could go to nurse next time and lie and say I’ve quit smoking and continue to get the injection.
I’m just annoyed and feel he didn’t treat me very fairly.

I not an expert on this, but sometimes (in Ireland anyway) the Medical Board send out bulletin things saying ‘don’t give this to people who smoke’ or ‘don’t give this injection for hay fever anymore because it causes atrophy on the arse’

They only realise after a few years that things can be dangerous, your doctor does sound blunt but he might have been told not to give it anymore to smokers, so that’s that.

There must be something suitable for smokers though. I suppose doctors are afraid of being sued now so it’s not an easy job for them.

Anyway sorry for the ramble! I hope you find something else.

You aren't supposed to use it for more than 2 years at a time due to the thinning effect on the bones. This will be exacerbated by smoking which will be another reason to use something else

Mini pill would be ok to use

nettynoodle · 17/07/2018 20:56

Last time I saw the nurse I asked her how long I could be on it and she said until menopause.
He said something about not being able to have just one hormone.
Tbh the doctor is rude and not helpful at all. My arm could be falling off and he’d tell me to use a plaster! I am going to find a family planning clinic to get some more advice.
As honestly wouldn’t trust myself to use condoms every time in a long term relationship (yes irresponsible I know but I’m being honest) bad family history with coils so not keen on that idea.
I do appreciate the sensible reply’s.

Mini pill is ok for smokers. It is the bone density issue with depo that makes smoking an issue

Made an appointment with a family planning clinic. Hopefully they will be willing to discuss options with me.

I’m 41 and had a total smoking relapse recently. I was worried how it would affect my contraception.
They were happy for me to have the Mirena coil, which is pretty good really.
I think the FPC is your best bet.

nettynoodle · 19/07/2018 09:50

Really don’t want a coil. Bad family history with them. But I’m sure FPC will be able to find me something.
