Replacing a mirena coil - anyone done this?

fairypuff · 11/07/2018 19:43

My mirena coil is due for removal fairly soon so I have 3 questions.

Firstly, does it wear off? Am I less likely to be protected from pregnancy after 4 and a half years or is it still as effective?

Secondly, when I do get it replaced is it a case of 'one in, one out' in the same appointment?

Finally, I bled for weeks after getting my first one in, will I bleed for weeks again?

Any gynae experts on tonight?!

  1. I think once it's older than 5 years it's still effective but they can't guarantee it's as effective after this time so you do need to replace it to be safe.
  1. Yes. Though you may need a prescription, I had to collect mine from the chemist and take it to the appointment (I had to peel, the box was huge!)
  1. Not sure. I bled more the second time as it was a different GP and she struggled.

I went to a sh clinic and it was one out one in. I didn't have to pick up my own!

Oh and she nicely mentioned that when I come for my next one I'll be an older lady. Suspect she was hinting at if you still need one :) ill be 43!

  1. my doctor said it was fine that I left it just over 5 years
2, I had to book a double appointment in advance with a specific doctor and it was one out one in and I didn't have to pick up my onw
  1. I bled far less

I had one out one in, didn’t need to collect and yes, I did bleed.

StealthPolarBear · 11/07/2018 19:51

I don't think I bled this time. Did last time. But this time was much more straightforward, no rummaging around.

Pippylou · 11/07/2018 19:51

In & out same appt. Bit of cramping, no bleeding after insertion.

I'm getting mine replaced on Tuesday. Yes one out one in. I'm 49 and the nurse at the SH clinic said it will do me until I'm 55 and done with the menopause (her words)

Thank you ladies. Knew I could rely on the knowledge of MN to answer my questions! Smile

Pippy just being pedantic but it's out then in :o in then out could get tangled

Doilooklikeatourist · 11/07/2018 20:02

One in. One out
No difference in bleeding , just a little spotting
Kept the second one in for about 7 years ( til I was 46 ) as my fertility would be low enough to need no precautions

Pippylou · 11/07/2018 20:17

Ha, ha, yes!

(-:

whiteroseredrose · 11/07/2018 20:17

I'm on my 3rd and only slight spotting when they were changed. From memory they were licenced for 7 years in Finland so you're ok if you let them overrun a bit.

Mines been in 9 years & I haven't had a period in all that time so I guess it's still working.
Got a scan next week as strings have disappeared as I want it removed to be replaced with the copper coil.
The mirena been great ( did I mention no periods for 9 years) But I've suffered from anxiety & depression since it was put in & I've read the mirena can contribute to moods

fairypuff · 11/07/2018 20:42

Hmmm allthingsred, I think my moods are purely down to 2 energetic toddler boys, not my mirena!!
