Mirena coil and headache

I got my copper coil replaced with a mirena 2 days ago on the recommendation of my gynaecologist as I was bleeding between periods on the copper coil.

I've noticed that I have a headache since yesterday. It's a dull, constant ache rather than severe/migraine but a nuisance nonetheless.
Will it disappear after the hormone level settles?
My GP put in the mirena and said I was in fit a tough 3 months while my body adjusted.

Hello, I was coming on here to post similar. Had mirena fitted 6wks ago and thinking I might get it removed. I would say most days I have a headache. This is something I had when I was on the pill years ago, and one of the main reasons I didn't go back to that after being off 4yrs to make babies.

This sounds silly but I am finding it hard to point the finger right at the coil. I can't remember what's normal or not, or whether it's coincidence. But I've had a headache all week now.

I also had very low mood the first few weeks, random tears, and still feel grumpy. But maybe I'm normally grumpy?!

I don't know whether to give it longer or just get it removed. Is 6 weeks long enough to tell if it'll settle in?

I'm due to have one, as I'm about to have my copper one removed. I went Wednesday but was unaware they couldn't do it if you'd had sex within the last 7 days.

I'm confused- why can they use the coil as emergency contraception, but can't take out an old and insert a new if you've had sex within 7 days?

Am I missing something obvious?

Also I'm a bit unsure about going from copper to mirina. Any advice? Am I making a mistake? It was suggested as I'd have lighter periods although mine aren't troublesome anyway🤷🏻‍♀️

Hay- 6 weeks is a long time to have a headache, not sure I could put up with it much longer if it were me. I had a headache for 4 weeks when taking cerazette so packed it in for something else a few years ago.
My headache has gone, it took about 4 or 5 days to go, but back to normal now. Thank goodness.

Snowy- it's the copper coil that is used for emergency contraception as it stops a fertilised egg implanting. I don't know as much about the mirena coil. I was advised to use condoms for 3 weeks after insertion for infection purposes. I didn't ask too much as sex is not a regular occurrence for us at the moment. Can I ask why your having your copper coil removed? I would have kept mine if it wasn't for the bleeding.

The doc is going to call me Monday so I'll see what she says. The headache isn't every day but is several times a week, and it's on about day 5 now.

Of talked me into it 'your periods stop', but am I making a mistake?

I did have a little bleeding occasionally after sex, investigated and all is well. Should I stick with the copper? Just normal periods every 28/35 days. I'm afraid of adding hormones as the pill I was taken off as it made me unwell.

Too early for me to know if I made the wrong decision or not but it was the gynaecologist who recommended that I changed the copper coil for something else. Periods weren't horrendous, would have happily continued as I was.

The GP told me the the mirena is equivalent to taking 2 mini pills a week, the hormone level is so low. And you can always swap back to the copper one if the mirena doesn't work out.

That's what I'm thinking. Have it put in on the condition that if I start to feel unwell I can change asap.

Well I had it put in yesterday! No pain at all going in, and not a single cramp or tummy pain since. They did say if I don't like it, they will take it out as soon as I ask and fit a copper coil, so that's reassured me a lot.

My doctor suggested giving mine a further 6 weeks. She said when it's fresh in its the equivalent of a fully charged battery, so it'll calm down a bit. Apparently as the womb lining depletes even less hormone gets into your blood stream. Haven't had a headache for 3 days now so keeping fingers crossed.

I'm glad the headaches are reducing, fingers crossed it settles. When did they start? As I said all good for me so far, but I'm scared that they will start. I'm useless with headaches, as they often lead to a migraine. But I've learnt to avoid the triggers, and can't avoid this!

Hey I don’t know if you’ll reply but I have merina inserted whilst under having a gynae op three weeks ago and I’ve had nothing but migraine since, do they settle down? If so I can soldier it but if not it needs to go xx

Hi RoxieMariee23 I’m in the same boat 2 weeks after mirena fitted and an awful recurrence of nasty migraines which I haven’t had for a while. Did it end up settling for you?
