Bleeding up to my tits - Mirena?

I’m at the end of my rope.

I wasn’t on any hormonal contraception for years (DH had a vasectomy) but for the past couple of years my periods have been horrendous and I have been diagnosed with suspected Adenomyosis.

I tried cerazette to control my periods and had a 5 month period with flooding so bad at the end I once bled through a super plus tampon in 5 minutes.

I have tried 3 different types of the combined pill and periods are still so bad I flood right up the front of my top on a half hour journey home from work. The blood clots are the size of eggs and still really painful but no breakthrough bleeding.

They are now pushing me to have a Mirena. I had one 12 years ago and bled for 5 months on that too but apparently my body chemistry may have changed and they won’t entertain any kind of other intervention before I try it again. They don’t want to give me ablation because I have had 2 sections and apparently it’s not that effective for adenomyosis.

It seems pointless but I’m willing to try anything right now. I’m anaemic, depressed and have lost all my motivation for anything. I’m a bit worried about doing anything to make me bleed even more but willing to give it a try. I just want rid of the fucking thing frankly.

Any experiences?

Worth trying Mirena again but be prepared it will probably will take a looong time to settle!

I'm similar in that nothing seems to stop my period but finally had success with having both a mirena and taking cerazette at the same time. Eventually I could wean off the cerazette and was blissfully period free for two years ( until a polyp came along and ruined it all again!!).

Assuming you've had a scan and some investigation for the heavy periods?

MeganChips · 02/05/2018 21:14

Thanks Butterfly

I didn’t know you could do that! That could be worth a try, I might suggest it.

The heavy periods is down to the adenomyosis. And my age apparently.

I've had Mirenas in for the last 17 or so years. Wouldn't be without it, it's stopped me from being housebound for a week of the month. I don't mind the fitting or removal, and the last one took about 4 months to settle in and stop the bleeding.
A few months of periods always reminds me why it's there!!

I know this sounds mad but my doctor told me that the older, stronger pills are better for women who bleed on contraception.

Would it be worth trying an older stronger pill?

I have problems with contraception too but nothing this extreme!!!

There is no way I would get the mirena.

Definitely go back to the doctor for a full chat about your options, this can’t go on.

I’m really sorry you are going through this and I just wanted to wish you well.

TBH OP if I was suffering like this I would demand a hysterectomy. Would that be something you'd consider? I have a Mirena and it has not been the magic bullet I was hoping for. It seems to me, from talking to many friends in their mid 30s - mid 40s that doctors are REALLY pushing us all to get these Mirena coils. Presumably it suits them to have us all on long-term contraception which CAN be brilliant if it stops periods (which apparently it does for 1/3 of women). My periods are slightly lighter, but every bit as erratic on it and my cycle is still 23 days. In your shoes I wouldn't let them fob me off with Mirena, I'd demand a partial hysterectomy (i.e. removal of the uterus alone).

What a terrible situation, you poor thing. I’m appalled that you’ve had to suffer so much. You must be feeling so weary. Trust you’re on iron tablets/injections or infusions.

I’m assuming you been referred to a gynaecologist?

My friend was referred to one by her GP with symptoms much less severe than yours. She had ablation and mirena fitted at the same time. She only had a little bit of spotting for a few weeks and no bleeding since. She was worried about possible sideffects from the progesterone but she’s been fine.

Is there anything here that helps at all?

Thanks all. I will have a good luck at that website spacefrog, thank you.

I am on iron, I have been on 610mg ferrous fumerate for the past 3 months. I have no idea if they are working yet as I still feel bollocksed. I am usually quite fit and now I can’t even climb a flight of stairs.

I have been referred to a gynaecologist. I was actually referred because I have a bulge in my pelvis so large (and painful!) I thought it was a hernia. He sent me away with a recommendation for a Mirena and to massage and said the bulging uterus was just scar tissue. I’m in constant pain which is relieved by the pill so I don’t believe it is just scar tissue.

I am very tempted to demand a hysterectomy! I did ask but obviously not forcefully enough.

I’m just feeling a bit whingy. I am due on tomorrow so have booked 2 days working from home in anticipation.

Ok I was the same, some proven endo but suspected adenomyosis as my uterus is massive and fleshy...mmmm.....I used to bleed through everything. I have a mirena, the first 6 months were tough with light brown bleeding pretty much daily but now I have two days of very very light bleeding. I tried the pill but oral hormones affect my moods too much.

Having said that other people I know haven’t got on with the mirena at all. It’s hard to know until you try, and a hysterectomy is a big op so imo worth ruling out other solutions.

AJPTaylor · 02/05/2018 22:41

I had a mirena. It actually made it worse.
Hysterectomy is your answer. I had one due to massive fibroid pushing on bladder so was fast tracked and had it dond within a month. Best thing ever. I was back at work 6 weeks later. If you are overweight start losing it now cos my consultant said bmi usually has to be under 28 for non emergency.

user2929 · 03/05/2018 05:23

Mirena was awful. Three months of constant bleeding. I quickly had it removed.

Try the mirena. Yes it needs to settle ( and as pp says adding in cerazette orsimilar might help at first) buyif it works you will be pleased you chose it. Doctors 'push' them because they work, have few risks , are economical and reversible if don't suit. Most mirena users are happy with them.
