Mirena coil fitted today so nervous

I have had a previous post about getting the Copper coil but after appointment doctor thought due to heavy periods mirena might be the better option but i am so so nervous about getting it put in Blush i had an appointment last month but my nerves got the better of me and i didn't go through with it, i now have an appointment for this afternoon but i feel sick at the thought of going, can anybody please advise me what is it really like? Is it painful?

For background i already have 2 dc and only had my first smear - few months ago after ignoring the letters for few years as was to scared (very petty and silly to do i know) i did go and all was fine - is the mirena fitting the same as smear?

It's very similar to a smear, takes a bit longer and it can pinch a little but it's nothing awful - I've had two fitted now and wouldn't bat an eyelid to go again

You could take paracetamol before you go if you like but I don't think it's worth it

Good luck and it's brilliant as I was heavy bleeding prior to my first coil fitting and rarely have a period now

I’m on my second copper coil and honestly it’s fine. This one took ages to get in as well but you just feel period pain type cramps.

OliviaStabler · 05/04/2018 13:44

I was told to make sure I took two painkillers before I went. It did hurt but no more than a bad period pain.

princesspeppax · 05/04/2018 13:45

Thank you i was the exact same with my smear constantly cancelling appointments making myself feel sick and sweating at the thought as petty as that sounds and when i went i couldnt believe how easy it had been and i felt so silly but now with this again i feel the same happening i am working myself up so badly at the thought and one friend did not help by telling it felt like she was being "butchered" Confused i am just hoping for some positive opinions on here to try make me feel calmer so thankyou

It’s fine, I had an anaesthetic in my cervix as I haven’t had children, they may offer you this. If you’ve had two children it’ll be a breeze in comparison!

It was more painful than a smear to me (which don’t bother me at all) and I felt a bit lightheaded afterwards, opening your cervix can make your blood pressure drop. I had some period like cramps for a couple of days after as it settled in, but nothing I couldn’t cope with. I’m still really happy with my decision 18 months later.

Just an update, got the coil put in and was surprised at how well it went. Uncomfortable at times but not anywhere near what i was expecting although she did use numbing gel and i did have a fantastic nurse talking to me throughout while i got it fitted.

Did anyone experience spotting / light bleeding after and can advise on how long it lasted for ?

They advised me to wear an external pad in case of spotting. I did bleed on and off for the next two weeks after insertion but after that it tapered off. Six months after fitting my periods completely stopped. Bliss!

BrokeAndBad · 06/04/2018 12:55

Thank You!! I'm getting mine fitted next week at the gynaecology clinic... not looking forward to it

Having a hysterscopy at the same time too Sad so a "it went ok" thread is good right now! Horror stories and I'd probably cancel

No kids

TinWhistleTunes · 06/04/2018 13:01

Glad it went well. Mine didn't hurt much either.

I had spotting for a couple of months, but no heavy bleeding at all. My skin cleared up (perimenopause) and I felt so much better. No more nightmare periods which meant I couldn't leave the house, it was life changing!

Mine fell out all by itself a few weeks ago - so strange and apparently this is very rare. I'm definitely going to try another one.

princesspeppax · 06/04/2018 16:26

Im hoping that it stops my period completely but even if its lighter will still be so much easier Grin quite a list of side effects though which is a bit of a pain but hoping they are not to bad, so far very glad i braved it and went for it

First coil I had a few days of light bleeding, second was three months, very light, often just after loo so rarely resorted to pads, doctor said it was fine as it was probably hormonal changes with new coil

I found it fine, having it inserted and the removal. You'll be ok.

MsHippo · 12/04/2018 16:10

Thanks both! I'm sat at work impatient for the time to pass now, just want to get it over with!

MsHippo · 12/04/2018 18:25

Sat in the waiting room now. Clinic is apparently running very late so probably in for a bit of wait...

princesspeppax · 15/04/2018 21:45

Hi mshippo hope all went well

Hi @princesspeppax ! Yeah it was fine. The actual fitting was just a bit uncomfortable and I felt fine immediately afterwards. I felt a bit wobbly on the way home and that evening, and had some pretty nasty cramps, but DP looked after me and was very sweet. I've had no bleeding/spotting at all since. How are you doing?

WipsGlitter · 16/04/2018 07:33

Does a GP fit it or a gynaecologist?

MsHippo · 16/04/2018 07:40

Both can. Some GPs won't do it themselves though and will refer you to a GUM clinic. This is what happened to me and it was fitted by a Consultant in sexual health.

princesspeppax · 16/04/2018 14:24

I am still having random spotting with mild cramping which is a bit annoying, but only 11 days in so hoping it settles real soon

Mine was also a doctor from the sexual health clinic as our gp surgery does not fit them
