I know loads of people have discount codes offered? Does anyone have one I can use? I’m giving it a go after all other options have caused intolerable side effects.

I don't have a code but just wanted to say, 6 months in and I love it.

Weathergirl1 · 01/04/2018 21:47

I think this is 30% discount (from what it said in the app!): I've been using it now for nearly 2 years and no regrets at all:

I’ve been using Natural Cycles to prevent pregnancy for 8 months and I love it!! I was on various forms of contraception for over 8 years such as every type of pill, implant, coil etc and none worked for me! all had nasty side effects and I never had a ‘regular’ cycle. It took 2.5 months for me to ovulate after coming off the pill but now I ovulate every month and I’ve learnt sooooo much about my body! I still don’t have a ‘regular’ as it varies from cycle day 16-25 for me to ovulate, and cycle length varies but i can see what’s going on with my body from my chart and I still get a good amount of green days and I just feel SO much better in myself. It’s the best decision I’ve ever made and I’ll happily use Natural Cycles for the rest of my life, switching to plan when I want to have a baby then going back to prevent. Love it! Honestly you wouldn’t regret trying it!

I have been reading in to this I am sick of being on contraception and would love a more natural approach but terrified Of getting pregnant?!?

MrsBryonyB · 29/08/2018 08:04

There has been a fair bit of bad press at the moment, but they don’t focus on the thousands and thousands of women susig it successfully, and alot of the unplanned pregnancies when you look into it are down to user error; mainly people thinking withdrawal is acceptable on red days. We use condoms on red days and nothing on green days. If you want to be extra cautious you can treat pre ovulation green days as red days and use a condom, and then only after ovulation has been confirmed trust the green days as they are 100% safe. The app allows for 5 days pre ovulation and 2 days after as the ‘fertile period’ to take sperm survival into account. I don’t have a regular cycle so I don’t get pre ovulation green days other than during my period so if you’re not regular the app takes that into account and is more cautious. A lot of the unplanned pregnancies were also due to unexpected early ovulation which the app admits it can’t account for but that’s what goes into the 93% effectiveness rating, which is on par with ‘typical’ use of the pill. Getting used to remembering to temp every morning was fairly easy for me as it’s no different than having to remember to take a pill every day. And having to use a condom every now and then is well worth it to be hormone free!!

Dontaskmyname · 29/08/2018 11:09

YY to Mrs Bryony’s point about early ovulation. It had happened to me in Cycle 5 when I had green days 2 days before ovulation. Had we had unprotected sex on those days, I had a high risk of getting pregnant. Fortunately, we didn’t. AND the app has learnt and has since only given me green days for 5 days during period and red days until confirmed ovulation. This can be 2 weeks of red days sometimes if ovulation is late. But I know myself now and can see it on the graph, I do not feel out of the woods until I am 3-4 days over the cover line, and the app normally gives me green days too at that point. If I am in the lower half/ below the cover line, no way would I be having unprotected sex, it means ovulation has not happened yet and can do so at any time. Given that sperm can survive up to 5 days, you are only truly safe POST ovulation. So, the important thing to take away is green days after period and before ovulation are not 100% foolproof safe, as the app cannot predict when exactly the ovulation will happen. And you got a five day delay with sperm survival window. The app can only detect ovulation after it happened, so can you looking at the graph and taking into account other symptoms, cervical mucus etc. After that point, you are not fertile and can have all the fun you want without consequences.

So yeah, the app does rely a lot on user input and human factor. However, I detest the idea that women cannot be trusted to be in charge of their own fertility. Any doctor will advise contraception which is not user dependent as it takes that human factor out, ideally implant or coil.

If it makes you feel better, I know people who got pregnant while on the coil and while taking the pill. So pill is not foolproof + the horrendous side effects to ‘enjoy’. My experience with coil was truly frightening. Got it inserted by a Consultant, had lots of sex the three months after only to discover at 36 week check that the coil was half hanging out, so was protecting nobody. I didn’t feel it, I had no idea it changed position or indeed how long it had been like that.

So yeah, have been through all the forms of contraception. Don’t trust the coil after what happened and nothing will make me put those nasty hormones in my body again. I am entitled to have some sort of quality of life, too.

Natural Cycles has got a failure rate like any contraceptive, it is also open to human factor influence more than an implant for example. But at long last be in charge of my fertility and being able to make informed decisions is worth a lot to me. Not grin and bear hormones for months/ years when the risky fertile window is only 14-17 days in each cycle (based on my data).

MrsBryonyB · 29/08/2018 11:16

YES YES YES! 👏 @Dontaskmyname

MrsBryonyB · 29/08/2018 13:18

I ovulated on CD13 once so now it allows for that even though over not done it for months and usually it’s between CD19-24! And I don’t trust any ‘pre-ovulation’ days just incase. 9 months and no pregnancy yet because I’ve learnt how it works and implement the knowledge I’ve gained as well as what the app is telling me. So I can see when is safe and not save even if the app didn’t tell me :)

OP I've hope you have seen this - www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-45328965

Fertility awareness methods are fine if getting pregnant isn't a problem.

MrsBryonyB · 29/08/2018 22:29

Or if you know how to use it properly, if you want to be extra cautious don’t trust pre ovulation days, don’t use withdrawal method. If you use it probably you’ll be fine. All the news is based on the negative but what about the hundreds of thousands do women who have used it successfully. It has a 93% effectiveness rating, same as typical use of the pill. It has over 300,000 users so around 21k unplanned pregnancies would be in line with typical use of the pill! And there have been nooooo where near that many reported unplanned pregnancies. It’s a woman’s own choice to chose what she does with her own body! Without everyone encouraging her to pump herself full of hormones! Most people are mature enough to weigh up the options and decide what is best for them. No method is 100% effective!! Xx

Dontaskmyname · 29/08/2018 23:09

I found today’s BBC coverage somewhat sensational and ill informed. If we are talking facts, typical use effectiveness of the pill is 91% or 9 out of 100 women falling pregnant. Typical effectiveness use of Natural Cycles is 93% or 7 out of 100 women falling pregnant. So yes, it is still more effective than the pill if used correctly.

Where it goes wrong is people don’t take account of things/events to upset the basal temperature and still rely on it regardless, i.e. you had an all night bender, your BT is useless and way off, you cannot apply it. You were woken up by your baby 4 times in the night, your BT is no good the next morning. You went to the loo after waking up without thinking, you cannot measure now. You are under the weather, your BT is not suitable. You are jet-lagged, you are hungover etc etc The user has to have a stable lifestyle, little/no drinking or late nights, not a shift worker, not someone who travels across time zones routinely.

And the app needs time to learn about you and your patterns, it is not abandon all caution on day 1 of use. Whatever happened to good old common sense.

If your lifestyle is chaotic exciting and your sleep often disturbed, this method is not going to be suitable for you.

And yes, you can get pregnant on the pill, all it takes is a short episode of Diarrhoea or vomiting and voila. Or more commonly forgetting to take a pill/ doing so later than normal. All the while having the pleasure of being a depressed, fat and devoid of libido individual thanks to the contraceptive.

NFP involves a fair bit of discipline, common sense and dare I say intelligence from the user. This is why you will never catch a doctor recommending it. They don’t want to rely on your good sense, while they can insert an implant and they know it WILL be working, even if you feel like s* on it. It is effective as far as medical profession is concerned, same with Mirena coil. Nobody is particularly interested how it affects women’s quality of life. There is now a defined link between hormonal contraception and depression. And we all know about uncontrollable weight gain, loss of sexual desire, increased risk of stroke, increased risk of cancer, deep vein thrombosis etc etc

NFP is free of any side effects/ health risks, this is why it is so attractive. It does require discipline, diligence and common sense though. It is not something you can inject and forget about for 3 months, it needs constant conscientious input.

Agree with @MrsBryonyB and @Dontaskmyname completely.

There was an article about it in New Scientist about two weeks ago and they properly compared different types of contraception (see diagram). I'm mostly paraphrasing here, but:

  1. The app is comparable with the combined pill,
  2. The most common reason for pregnancies is failing to use protection when the app shows a red day.
  3. Condoms show typical use rate of 18 out of 100, which is pretty poor.

To quote the article though, "Condoms slip down the rankings because many people skip using them". That sentence seems bonkers to me - if you're not using them, I don't see how those figures can be included! It's not exactly the same as forgetting to take a pill Hmm
