Contraception whilst breastfeeding

Wanting to get on some contraception soon as I gave birth a week ago but didn't know what options breastfeeding left me with. I don't like the idea of being on any hormonal things or does it matter?

You can go on the mini pill, microgynon reduces supply apparently.

My gp informally told me that I would'nt get pregnant while breastfeeding.... Well she was wrong!! I got pregnant at 6 months...

Luckily we were semi trying/if we fell pregnant it wouldn't have been a bad thing. Next time I'll be looking at the copper coil (hormone free). Although I hear it can give bag periods.

Pennywhistle · 30/03/2018 22:17

I was on the mini pill.

dementedpixie · 30/03/2018 22:18

Depo, mini pill, implant, mirena, copper coil are all ok I think

CountFosco · 30/03/2018 22:19

Condoms are your easiest option initially but once you've healed a bit then a copper coil is a good option.

Is mini pill hormonal?

OP posts:
NickyNora · 31/03/2018 01:49

Yes the mini pill is hormonal.

NickyNora · 31/03/2018 01:49

As is the Mirena Coil.

MinisWin · 31/03/2018 02:09

Combined pill also considered to be fine to use as per latest guidelines - effects on supply not as significang as previously thought.

dementedpixie · 31/03/2018 08:28

Its not ok before 6 weeks though

MinisWin · 02/04/2018 16:52

Sorry pixie, you’re absolutely right, missed the bit in the OP about only having given birth a week ago.

Cici14 · 28/04/2018 11:23

You can start the mini pill 6 weeks after giving birth, i believe this is so you ensure your milk production is fully established. However i myself couldn't even bare sex untill after 3 months and even then found it painful for a while, happy to say its not painful anymore!

I'm currently using a Desogestrel mini pill, which is the 12 hour one. But i'm not 100% confortable with this whilst breast feeding due to the hormones, as a small amount passes through to breast milk, although studies have shown no effect on children, this has only been conducted until the child is 2 so there is no indication of the effects on children past this age. However i feel no other practical option for me at the moment.

My son is now 42 weeks, and i have only been taking the pill for 10 days, previous to that i was using condoms and withdrawel method, however i find condoms cause me irritation and withdrawel is not exactly fall proof.

I did also join natural cycles, this is wear you monitor your body tempreture the same time every morning before you even get out of bed, and once you have been monitoring a while you get red days (don't have sex or use other methods) and green days, which means good to go non fertile day, in principle this was great but as baby wakes at different times in the morning i couldn't get into a routine.

Hope this helps!

dementedpixie · 28/04/2018 13:28

Mini pill can be started 21 days after birth.

Cici14 · 28/04/2018 13:34

I stand corrected Smile
