Failed Mirena insertion. What now?

I finally plucked up the courage to have a Mirena inserted and they couldn't do it.

After a fair bit of trying (and pain) they had to give up.

I've had a baby and I'm in my mid forties so it should have worked.

The nurse said she hadn't really had that happen before and the only thing I could try would be ask the family planning clinic to have a go.

It's mainly for period pains as they are terrible. I'm currently in agony right now from it.

Basically - I wondered if this had happened to anyone and what they had done, is it worth going through the procedure again?

Did they give you a local anaesthetic in your cervix? This can make all the difference getting them in. Or try a different doctor/nurse. Did they say what they thought the problem was?

MissWimpyDimple · 19/03/2018 12:15

They did apparently give some local anaesthetic although it was still pretty uncomfortable. Apparently my cervix just would not open enough to get it through?

I would try again if I thought the outcome was likely to be different. This was a very experienced nurse who said she does at least two a day! She seemed dubious as to whether anyone else would have more luck 😬

This happened to me, also post kids. Incredibly painful trying, with no luck.
GP sent referral to the gynaecologist and I had it done at the hospital. In about 5 minutes flat it was all sorted, I barely even knew she had started.
Get a referral OP!

GingerFoxx · 19/03/2018 12:29

The first time they tried mine it failed.
I was having gynae surgery a few months later so waited and they did it then (can obvs use a lot more force when I was anaesthetised).
I would try again elsewhere though

cindersrella · 19/03/2018 12:31

Mine has worked for 3.5 years (I am touching lots of wood) 😂😂

It really was uncomfortable when they put it in. I had a doctor put mine in. I would possible go and have a talk at the local family planning to the doctor 😀

DoneDisappeared · 19/03/2018 12:34

The family planning clinic is a good bet because they will have a load of experience putting them in. Also you can have it inserted during your period which may help it go in easier.

I have this problem - although I have never had a mirena - I've had other treatment that involved passing something through my cervix.

In my case it's because I have a "bulky cervix" like a S bend so impossible to get anything through.

For all 3 of my IVF treatments I had to have my cervix manually dilated under General anaesthetic.

There is no reason for my cervix being this way - the doctor just said it was a natural variation.

What's a POP?

MissWimpyDimple · 19/03/2018 21:47

I think POP is progesterone only pill.

I tried to call the family planning clinic today but it just rang out (that's not unusual for NHS services round here sadly).

I've made an appointment to see the doc and will ask for a referral.

So annoying as I now have hideous period cramps AGAIN. Was so hoping to swerve it 😔

Just to update for anyone that finds this thread through being in a similar situation.

I went back today and the head doc had another stab at it. This time it was no problem at all. I actually got the Jaydess as it's smaller and less hormones and it literally didn't hurt at all.

Now 10 hours later and still no pain.

So far so good 👍🏼
