Any experience/ advice on the copper coil ? Been recommended it as it has no hormones in it but keep finding total horror stories about how sore it is getting put in ?

I've had mine for a week, but have previously had two before. Never bad any problems with it.
Re: insertion, I have a really small hole where it needs to go in through the cervix, if they can get it in mine they can get it in anyone's. I took a few breath when they actually insert it and a cough then it was in! I recommend getting it done at the family planning clinic and not the doctors as they have much more experience fitting them. Also, I went on day 4/5 of my period as the cervix is more open then.
As I'm 40 now, it can stay in until menopause.

@abstractblueish that made me properly laugh. The person that said it was worse than childbirth, just how? Lol.

Good luck with the mirena princesspeppax I found it did feck all with my periods and actually I had my periods for nearly 2 months I was anaemic by the point of removal so it doesn't always help on that front I put up with it for a year before I got it removed as they kept promising it would be better Hmm

I haven’t had a Mirena coil but for me using something hormonal would defeat the purpose of having a coil. I’d rather have an implant any day.

@LoveInTokyo Isn't the implant a higher dose though? My GP said if I didn't get on with Cerazette I wouldn't get on with the implant.

blibblibs · 16/03/2018 18:13

I've had both and much prefer the copper coil.
Mirena was a nightmare hormonally and my libido nose dived for the 6 years I had it in. And it was in for 6 years due to it getting lost and a fantastic GP finally managing to get it out. I had no periods which was great but that was the only good thing about it.
Got the copper on in as I actually wanted my periods back and my moods to be my own. It's been great, they last about 4days and I don't think they are any heavier but I hadn't had any for near on ten years so can't really remember. Only problem is I now have a 23 day cycle.
I definitely prefer the copper coil.

MochaRioja · 16/03/2018 18:20

My periods are heavier but not too bad but I always had short/light periods anyway so they are probably just normal now.

I find sex if I'm on top painful sometimes but the doctor said the coil is in it's correct position.

It may just be a coincidence but i've has 4 bouts of cystitis and one quite nasty bladder infection since having it fitted last February.

Inserting it was fine and fuss free.

LoveInTokyo · 16/03/2018 18:30

I was told that the implant is a lower dose than the pill and the injection because it’s slow release rather than one big dose at a time. I would guess it’s probably on a par with the Mirena coil.

I think the comparison with Cerazette is more to do with the composition of the hormones, rather than the actual dosage. I could be wrong though.

But my doctor did prescribe me Cerazette for a few months first and I didn’t have any problems, so if you didn’t get on with Cerazette maybe Mirena would be better.

My reason for preferring the implant to the coil is mostly down to the cramps I get on the coil, which I think is due to your uterus contracting around a foreign object rather than just around empty space, if you get what I mean. I also have much heavier periods on the coil, but mine is a copper coil so that might not be the case with Mirena.

princesspeppax · 16/03/2018 18:58

Reason i didnt want an implant was one friend told me it causes really bad weight gain and depression as side effects, and my DPs cousin snapped inside her arm Confused but i guess its like everything whats for one isn't necessarily best for all so i will try mirena and keep my fingers crossed that it is good

I didn’t notice any weight gain (that I would link to the implant) or any other side effects. I think it’s one of those things that if it works for you it works really really really well and you can’t understand why everyone else doesn’t get one, but other people might have very different experiences.
