Contraception at 49

I've just started a new relationship at the grand old age of 49 after a break from sex for 12 years.

I really don't know what to do about contraception. As STIs have already been ruled out we don't want to use condoms. I don't smoke but I am overweight. Currently my periods are about 24 days apart and quite light so I really don't want that to change for the worse.

Have only ever had the pill in the dim and distant past so no experience of coils or implants.

What would you do?

Mini pill, injection, implant or coil would all be options. I think combined pill/patch would be contraindicated due to weight

A Mirena coil sounds like a plan. They stop your periods (or are meant to and this was my experience) and can stay in for five years or longer if you go through the menopause in that time. They were my Mums contraceptive of choice in her 40s and 50s and she hasn’t long had the last one out a few years post menopause being complete.

I'm nearly 49 and have a mirena coil which is due to be replaced in the summer. I'm planning to have anew one as the progesterone helps with the menopause. I think you could have an implant, contraceptive injection or progesterone only pill. I think it's it oestrogen they don't like you to have at our age. If you don't want hormones I suppose a diaphragm is an option

Thanks all. I'll take a closer look at the Modena coil.
