When you can't take hormones and don't want a copper coil

What do you go for?

If you haven't tried a non-hormonal coil I would recommend trying it - the expert nurse at the sexual health centre used anaesthetic and it was similar to a smear, and she did my smear while in there. I'm about to get mine replaced.

awkwardsitch · 16/02/2018 14:35

No chance of a copper coil. Even the FP consultant she would have to prescribe tranexamic acid with it for the "blood bath" periods. Nope. Not a chance.

VaguelyAware · 16/02/2018 14:59

Abstinence. Sad
I can't use hormonal contraception of any kind (the combined pill caused a particularly nasty, but rare reaction, which has left me disabled due to chronic, severe & very frequent hemiplegic migraines). Tried all types of progesterone only, nothing suits me. The copper coil caused joint pain (unpleasant but was just about coping), heavier periods (ditto), but then I got pregnant on it anyway & MC'd in first trimester, lasting about a month. So I don't trust it!
I mustn't get pregnant. My medication causes birth defects so it would not be wise. We were lucky that DD was born healthy. I didn't realise this until I'd got pregnant; any future pregnancy would need to be carefully planned.
I've asked about the diaphragm but was told it's not easily available & not sufficiently effective in my circumstances.
DH is getting sterilised as soon as we're sure we don't want another child. In the meantime, it's fairly rubbish.

BothersomeCrow · 16/02/2018 15:03

awkward Sorry to hear that - with me I was having terrible periods but only every few months, taking tranexemic or mefenemic acid etc, but once the coil was in I've had much lighter, nearly painless periods and practically a regular cycle - MN threads suggest that's fairly common though can also go the other way.

bluesouper · 16/02/2018 15:33

Vaguely you can buy a diaphragm from amazon - named Caya.
It's one size fits most (lol) but it's been a revelation for me.
No hormones, no condoms, I'm so happy with it. I think it's £40 so not cheap but I'm assured it'll last for years

Bluesuper

Is it easy to insert and remove? Can he feel it?

KittyandTeal · 16/02/2018 17:32

Condoms for now but I’m waiting for a laparoscopy with a sterilisation

VaguelyAware · 16/02/2018 17:45

BlueSouper - thanks, I'll look into that.

Branleuse · 16/02/2018 17:56

if you dont want hormones or the coil, then your only real options are condoms, cap or one of you getting sterilised

bluesouper · 16/02/2018 19:36

Cleo easy enough once you're used to it. They even send a dvd with instructions 😂.

I didn't tell DH I had it in for the first couple of times then I asked him if anything felt different recently... he looked puzzled and said no. He's the kind of man who would tell me straight! So yea I'm happy with it

Nottheduchessofcambridge · 18/02/2018 07:49

I also get Aura Migraines, can’t be on the pill because of the stroke risk. I had the copper coil and my periods were ma-hoosive blood baths! Swapped for the mirena and I barely have them now.
If you’re don’t want the coil or the mini pill, looks like it’s the barrier method for you.

awkwardsitch · 16/03/2018 13:34

I keep thinking I'll try cerazette again (if gp prescribes cerelle saying it's the same, I'll buy it from lloyds. They are not the same!!). Then I get put off by long term bleeding. Hmm

cleowasmycat · 19/03/2018 17:01

I had a hysteroscopy today and after they tried to insert a mirena coil. Was horrid and she had to give up. My gp also tried previously. They have said I can ask Doc to refer me for a general anaesthetic which seems extreme. I can't take pill or implant to looks like my options are v limited. Any ideas?

awkwardsitch · 19/03/2018 17:04

Mini pill?

furtile · 23/05/2018 11:09
