Combined pill at 40?

For the past few months my periods have been ridiculously heavy - have been to the doctors this morning who has put me on the combined pill to help with this as well as horrible pmt! Quick bit of background I've been super stressed over the past 18 months so he believes this is linked, I have no worrying symptoms to suggest otherwise- clear recent smear, no bleeding in between periods, no bloating, pain etc. My question is has anyone else been prescribed the combined pill to help with heavy periods and pmt and has it helped? Also anyone 40 or over? I'm 40 and was half expecting him to put me on the mini pill but apparently as I'm not overweight, normal blood pressure, I'll be fine and they are now prescribing this to women well into their 40s? Anyone over 40 on it and fine? Thanks for reading this far!

Combined pill is fine up to 50 as long as there are no other health issues.

FWIW, I stayed on it until 49 1/2 (when the GPs suddenly decided that as I had migraines, it would cause me to explode, so I should destroy all six remaining packets and never take another one). I was fine, but had headaches during the week off, if I did not drink plenty, (oestrogen withdrawal) which started when I was about 45, along with some menopausal type indications.

Look after yourself, eat healthily and exercise healthily and you should be fine.

There are also new pills, Qlaira (which is a phasic one which contains differing levels of hormone as the month progresses) and Zoelly which contain oestrodiol valerate which is more like our own oestrogen, and therefore considered to be better for perimenopausal women.
